The Role
As with most things- you really will get out what you put in.
After the first week or two when the initial training was over I felt more like an employee than an intern- especially when working on something they needed to use for client meetings/presentations.
It can vary depending who your mentor is but overall the HR team and managers are very approachable and supportive.
My workload picked up a lot about midway through the internship as projects built up and deadlines were closer.
Different projects had different levels of responsibility but the majority of work helped my managers on things they otherwise would have had to complete themselves. I worked in Electronic Trading Sales and helped create client presentations and technical graphs that were used the following week in presentations across the US (and that was by the end of week 2!).
If you're the sort of person who is keen to learn about the financial sector then I think you'll get a lot out of it. ITG does some pretty interesting stuff involving dark pools and MTFs which initially can be hard to understand but the employees are more than willing to explain it all in simple terms.
The Company
Very friendly and approachable atmosphere across almost all departments. The trading desk was the liveliest but everyone had a relaxed but hard working attitude.
Everything from the application stage to post internship has been well organised. We'd have organised nights out, community work and video conferences with the US/Dublin offices. My only minor negative was having to cover the cost of my travel to the assessment day (Train from the north to London).
Various things were organised for us from working with a local school to how to present and communicate effectively.
Company Parties/Events
It's certainly a business I'd like to work for in the future so will be keeping in contact and see what happens.
The Culture
Couldn't rate it enough!
Expect to pay London prices but if you find the right places then it's not a problem at all.
The City has got some great bars to go explore and the office is close to a lot of the good ones. Very lively on a Friday after work!
Mostly networking drinks with the managers and directors.
