What was the interview process like?
Very typical, following the same process as most other companies. The assessment centre was much more comfortable and enjoyable compared to others I’ve been to, as 3M just want to make sure you are a good match for the company rather than trying to catch you out.
How much responsibility do you have?
The level of responsibility I am given grows as and when I deliver results for the business. This approach has enabled me to develop a really ambitious mind-set and ‘go-getter’ attitude. As a result I’ve had some fantastic responsibility over the past year, allowing me to deliver some real impacts on the business. 3M most definitely trust their placement students and are not shy to dish out responsibility!
What advice would you give to students applying for your role?
Be ready to sell what you have on your CV, but also focus on your personality and key traits that will benefit 3M. Demonstrate how you are a great fit and will complement the culture here.
What do you most enjoy about your role?
I’ve been working on some great projects which have been very diverse, and I’ve really enjoyed being able to gain experience of such a range of marketing activities. It would be inexcusable to not mention the people though… in all of these projects I’ve been working with some fantastic people; who have really contributed to such an enjoyable year.
What has been your biggest challenge?
I’m part of a really big team, and with this I’ve had to give presentations to a lot of people. I initially found this a real challenge as I’ve never had to give any business presentations before; let alone to large groups of colleagues! However, I’ve received lots of useful support and advice throughout the year, and being thrown into the deep end has benefitted me hugely.
How has this experience exceeded your expectations?
I came into 3M with very high expectations, so to have them completely blown away has been incredible! The reality has been immense – I didn’t expect to be working on such diverse and enjoyable projects, I didn’t expect to get the responsibility I did, I didn’t expect my colleagues to be so trusting, I didn’t expect to develop my skills to such an extent, & lastly, I didn’t expect to have such outrageous fun!
What is the office atmosphere like?
The 3M atmosphere strikes that perfect balance between being hard working and results driven, yet fun and enjoyable. Ultimately, everyone is here to succeed and that is tangible – results are important. However, there is also a real focus on collaboration, fulfilment and gratification. 3M has a fantastic environment to work in.
What activities are there outside of work?
There is plenty going on to keep you busy outside of work! There are multiple clubs which anyone can take part in (including the sports teams), but also many big organised events such as the Christmas party, outdoor cinema, family fun day etc. Everyone is so friendly, that there are plenty of opportunities for team socials too.
