Tell us what you are studying at university.

I am currently studying marketing at Liverpool University. This includes modules such as Branding, Business Ethics, Entrepreneurship, Intro to Accounting and Finance, and Consumer Behaviour. In my second year I was eager to find a marketing placement at a large company to allow me to apply what I have been studying and gain experience of working in a global organisation.

Why did you choose to apply to Baxter for the Marketing Executive role?

Baxter appealed to me for many reasons. Initially, Baxter fit my criteria of offering a marketing placement and being an international company. I had not considered working in Healthcare, but I was intrigued to understand how the theories I had been studying are applied in a compliant industry. Additionally, following the Pandemic, their mission held greater importance to me which presented Baxter as a meaningful opportunity for me.

How’s your experience so far?

I have really enjoyed many aspects of my placement at Baxter. My highlights include hospital visits, team training days, team meetings, and running the Strava Factor BeWell event (a student lead project). This placement has also enabled me to overcome naiveties about working in industry and develop both personally and professionally. I have enjoyed the flexibility of working from home and feeling included in the team.

What advice would you offer other students who are thinking about applying?

Like any role, this role has some less exciting tasks so make sure Healthcare is something you feel passionate about. It is also key to think about what you are hoping to gain from your placement and the experience you want to gain. Baxter offers opportunities for you to meet your personal goals, such as presenting and networking, provided you are proactive and willing to make the effort.

As an Early Career Professional embarking on your future, what matters to you when looking at roles?

For me, it’s all about the people. The people you interact with influence how you feel. At Baxter I feel included and have developed many lovely relationships over my year here. It’s important to me that I feel accepted, and the culture at Baxter fosters just that. Additionally, the Business Resource Groups allowed me to expand my network which is critical to progressing up the ladder.

When looking for a new role I like to know where it might lead. In this case, the graduate scheme was the next step. At Baxter the placement students have first dibs at the graduate role, the thought of returning to my final year with a graduate position secured was massively attractive to me.

And finally, what are the key learnings you will be taking back to university from your placement year?

  • Don’t shy away from challenges – these will enable your greatest developments
  • Be organised and stay on top of things – to prevent the snowball effect
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help – Whether it’s your ego or you’re shy, people are there to help so use it
  • Apply business context to your critical analysis – Use your new knowledge to challenge theories. Your essays will become more meaningful
