Audit Assistant Manager

Accountancy

Graduate Job

My journey so far…

I was born in The Bahamas and grew up in the sunshine. I have great memories of spending time at the beach with my friends and family during my childhood. At school I was interested in maths and sports, playing volleyball and baseball in my spare time. Then in 2017, I moved to Kent to study accountancy, finance, and economics at university. My family had always travelled a lot, so moving to the UK felt like a fun and exciting opportunity, and I built some great friendships. During my time at uni, I completed Deloitte’s Summer Vacation Scheme, working in one of the audit teams. I learnt so much in a short space of time and saw how the teams challenge companies to improve their processes and reporting. It’s how I learnt that audit was what I wanted to do.

“Outside of my main job, I'm an active member of ‘Proud’, Deloitte’s LGBTQ+ network. I love the inclusive culture at work, and I recently organised a Pride event for the Birmingham office with the PRIDE Committee.”

Work that matters

I’m now an Audit Assistant Manager in the Birmingham office. My role involves reviewing the financial reporting processes of banks, to ensure they operate effectively. I enjoy it because the work I’m doing makes a real difference for the companies we audit, as well as the wider public, who know they can trust the businesses they use.

Outside of my main job, I'm an active member of Proud, Deloitte’s LGBTQ+ network. I’ve always been bisexual, but it wasn’t until I was 18 that I considering using a label to describe it openly. I love the inclusive culture here at Deloitte and I recently organised a Pride event for the Birmingham office. I volunteer for Black Pride ever year, helping to ensure the day goes smoothly. I think events are great because it can be hard to come out, not just to yourself but also to family and friends. It helps if people have a community they can go to where they feel a sense of belonging, no matter what stage of life or career they’re at.

I also volunteer as a Maths tutor within Deloitte’s 5 Million Futures’ volunteer programme. As education is such a pivotal point in a person’s life and can be a key stepping stone in reaching your career, helping children improve their skills is a very fulfilling role for me.

Highlights from my week

Monday:

I have a group team meeting to discuss what we want to get done for the week. We focus on work allocation and planning ahead.

Tuesday:

I meet with one of the companies we’re auditing, to provide an update on the process and discuss next steps.

Wednesday:

I’m working on software analysis today, to look at financial numbers. In the late afternoon I attend our meet and greet dinner for the PROUD network, which is a great chance to network.

Thursday:

I do lots of reviews today and meet with managers to see how we can improve the auditing work we’ve been doing. After work I go to boxing, which I really enjoy.

Friday:

I work from home on Friday to plan for the week ahead. I meet the Deloitte Black Network to assess how we can collaborative on events for Pride. In the evening I go out with friends for dinner.

My weekend looks like

I love sports and go to the gym for boxing training at least four times a week. It’s a good skills-based workout that keeps you learning, even after you’ve been practicing for years. I also love to eat and cook, and often meet friends for dinner. This year, one of my key goals was to fit in more time for travelling abroad. I’ve been to Athens and Tokyo, and next year I’m hoping to visit Italy for the first time.

3 things I've learned

Never be afraid to speak up

You need to trust yourself and know that doing the right thing is important, no matter what. It’s especially important to speak up for friends and co-workers when they need it.

Take your time

Whether it’s work, fitness or anything else, life is a cumulative process, and you won’t reach your goals overnight. You can’t rush or cut corners, you just have to learn to trust the process and keep showing up every day.

Always try

We miss so many opportunities because we fear the unknown. But I’ve learned that you need to face that fear to succeed and try the things you really want to do.

Becky's book recommendation

Rustin

This movie tells the story of Bayard Rustin, a gay civil rights activist. Although he played a key role in the civil rights movement, his sexuality was criticised by some people. The movie is an interesting, historical watch, and it shows how far we’ve come in terms of rights for LGBTQ and Black people. It’s also a reminder of how important it is to prioritise inclusion and ensure people have safe spaces to be themselves, both in the workplace and in wider society.
