Why did you choose to work at DLA Piper?

I'd been a Pathways to Law student while I was in sixth form and attended a couple of events where DLA Piper had been in attendance. Pathways to Law is a free programme run by the Sutton Trust to help students understand careers in law. It struck me then how much the firm cared about young talent, and particularly students from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. On my training programme, I've been incredibly fortunate to have worked alongside people, from all levels, who have unconditionally supported and guided me through the various challenges that come with being a trainee solicitor. As impressive as the work and the variety of clients are, I've always felt that the people at DLA Piper are the biggest selling point.

What have you learned from your experiences at DLA Piper?

Quite a lot! But I think the most important thing that I've learned is what it really means to work collaboratively in practice. In the lifecycle of a deal or a case, everyone has to work together to see it through from beginning to end. I don’t think I had appreciated how much teamwork is needed, but working in a law firm really teaches you the value of everyone's efforts and contributions, and how much we rely on one another. That's also why it's incredibly important to build good relationships with people, and learn to adapt to different working styles while also figuring out your own and what works best for you.

Do you have any advice for students aspiring to pursue a career in law?

Persist, and stay true to yourself! It's not a linear or straightforward journey for most people, and is often particularly challenging if you're from an underrepresented background. But, keep at it! Don’t be afraid of rejection and always have an open mind. Build a support system around you and use every resource available to you. Reach out to people, ask questions and don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Whatever it is that you think is likely to put you at a disadvantage, use this as your driving force and motivation to keep going.
