How would you describe the culture at DLA Piper?

The culture is genuinely supportive and collaborative. I've loved having the opportunity to regularly work with a diverse range of colleagues in Leeds, across the UK and internationally during my training programme. The colleagues that I've worked with have always been friendly, engaging and happy to help. As a trainee, I've felt like my contributions have been valued and appreciated by my colleagues.

What pro bono or sustainability-related activities have you been involved in?

During my first rotation, I supported the DLA Piper team with preparations for the United Nations COP27 conference. It was exciting to gather and synthesise input from various renewable energy subject matter experts across the international firm, contributing to the panel sessions hosted at the conference. My personal highlight was assisting the DLA Piper team with the preparation and publication of a draft law which aimed to facilitate investment in renewable energy in Africa. My name was included in the acknowledgements of the published law, which I thought was cool!

Do you have any advice for students aspiring to pursue a career in law?

If you get the chance, I'd recommend gaining some paralegal experience prior to starting your training programme. I worked as a paralegal in DLA Piper's Legal Delivery Centre and it developed and strengthened my professional skills and confidence, providing a solid foundation that allowed me to hit the ground running at the beginning of my training programme.

If you're unsure whether a career in law is for you, gaining some experience as a paralegal is also a great way to get an insight into the career before making your decision.
