What made you apply to the Financial Conduct Authority?
I am currently studying Law, Accounting and Finance at University and the summer internship programme at the FCA combines all aspects of my learning. After researching the FCA I was really excited about the prospect of working for an organisation with such a strong industry reputation and emphasis on developing its people. Looking forward, the structure of its graduate programme including the opportunity for further study sponsorship, as well as an external secondment, seemed like a great opportunity.
Describe a normal day in the office.
Each day was always different. My usual working day was 9am-6pm. Days included work shadowing, team meetings, and desk based input to live projects I was working on, often involving travel between the London and Edinburgh offices. I also enjoyed the weekly learning lunches and social activities with my cohort. After a busy day I enjoyed winding down in the gym or socialising with friends along the river at Canary Wharf.
What did you enjoy most about your placement/internship?
I was given exposure to all divisions. People are friendly and approachable regardless of role or seniority, and were happy to answer my questions. I also had the opportunity to present at a Senior Leadership Team meeting. This was great exposure and an opportunity to gain feedback for my own development. Most importantly I was given real responsibility – the work I contributed led to genuine output for the team.
What is the most valuable lesson you learnt on your placement/internship?
I learnt a huge amount during my internship. The most valuable learnings for me were the importance of first impressions, and also having the confidence to network throughout the organisation. Curiosity is essential as a summer intern. I was grateful that everyone was patient when listening to my questions and really took the time to explain things carefully to me. This was invaluable in expanding my knowledge. Never be afraid to ask questions.
What advice would you give to someone planning their placement/internship?
Research is key. Really consider the type of industry you want to work in and how the internship experience would complement your studies, and likewise where your skills could really make a difference. Speak to your careers service, make sure you take the opportunity to attend careers fairs and speak to people who work at the organisation. My research around the FCA allowed me to make an informed decision about where I wanted to be and I wasn’t disappointed.
