Why did you decide to join HSBC’s graduate programme?
Prior to joining the graduate scheme, I took part in the internship programme. During the 8 weeks as an intern I was able to gain an insight into the world of banking and the different paths available here at HSBC. The graduate development team also played a large role in my decision to accept the offer on the graduate programme. They are very supportive, and they really know how to prepare you and take care of you during the transition from university to work life.
Briefly describe your time on the programme
I have completed three rotations through different areas of the business, and in different locations, which I have really enjoyed. I have taken on everything from front line roles to risk, enabling me to develop different skill sets such as communication, presentation and analytics.
What has been your biggest success during your time at HSBC?
As a grad you can take part in a wide range of early careers groups. I am currently a member of the Ethnic Diversity Early Careers Community (EDECC) and I recently organised a breakfast networking event in Birmingham alongside another graduates. We invited senior stakeholders, and our graduates were able to build their knowledge and relationships across different business areas.
How do you find working in a hybrid environment?
Working in a hybrid environment allows me to focus on my work life balance. Having the opportunity to work at home helps me stay motivated and focused. I also enjoy the working in the office for networking and the ease of asking questions, so it’s great to have the option for both.
How would you describe the graduate community at HSBC?
The graduate recruitment team is very supportive and understanding both professionally and personally. They consider your well-being to be one of the top priorities as they understand the transition from university to work life can be challenging.
How would you describe the working culture at HSBC?
The work culture is nothing like I would’ve imagined. Before joining the bank, I thought it was going to be very strict and rigid. However, everyone is welcoming and willing to share their experience and knowledge. Overall, it’s a comfortable and relaxed environment.
Are you involved in any extracurricular activities at HSBC?
I’m part of the Ethnic Diversity Early Careers Community and the Neurodiversity Working Group as a communications lead. Additionally, I am part of the GradHub team, who maintain and improve the graduate website.
