What made you apply to Microsoft?
When thinking about applying for a placement I considered many different industries and companies, but knew I wanted to be in a fast paced innovative company. I met with the Microsoft team at my university and was able to gain insights from the current interns via blog and career events. After hearing stories about their intern experience with Microsoft and the amazing opportunities on offer, there was no way I was not going to apply.
How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
Throughout my year at Microsoft I have been involved in several projects, inside and outside of my role. These included fundraising for UK Youth, being part of the university events team and working with Microsoft Enterprise customers. My most enjoyable project gave me the opportunity to create a compelling story for our high profile customers on how Microsoft technology can inspire a new way in which companies can enhance their business. I showcased our latest Windows 8 software and devices: Windows Phone and the Surface.
What is the most valuable lesson you learnt on your placement?
I have learnt so much about myself - how to work with others and strive in the corporate environment. The most valuable lesson would have to be how to engage with customers and build customer relationships in a sales environment. The exposure I had this year allowed me to work with and present in front of some of Microsoft’s largest customers. These skills will most definitely help me at university next year as well as in the future.
What advice would you give to someone planning their placement/internship?
When applying it is really important to do as much background research as possible. Read the blog – it is an amazing and unique resource! After you start your role, take every opportunity you can to stretch yourself – you will have so many unique opportunities, so grab them with both hands. Finally, keep reviewing your progress and make sure you learn all you can from some of the best and brightest people in the industry.
