What was the application process like?
The process started by simply sending in a CV - cover letters and psychometric tests were not required. You must ensure your CV is relevant, showcases your impact and stands out. This was followed by a skype interview and an assessment centre.
What was the interview process like?
There were interviews at different stages including the online Skype interview and during the assessment centre. Questions were both competency and scenario-based and the interviewers took time to get to know you as well as being friendly and patient.
What advice would you give to students applying for your role?
Be yourself. Our culture is ‘come as you are and do what you love’ and so you should be comfortable to be your authentic self. However, come prepared. Make sure you have researched our culture, mission and are up to date with the latest news.
How much responsibility do you have?
From the outset you are given real responsibility - you are never seen as just an intern. For example, the intern program structure has a 20% stretch-project, my project included leading a philanthropy initiative with direct accountability to the UK CEO.
What do you most enjoy about your role?
I enjoy that I work with incredibly diverse and experienced colleagues who I learn from every day. Microsoft has a flat organizational structure so you have the opportunity to work alongside very senior individuals and grow your network.
What has been your biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge was initially adapting to some of my team members working remotely. At first this seemed daunting but now it second nature to meet, build a relationship with and successfully collaborate with people you have never met in person.
How has this experience exceeded your expectations?
Microsoft has exceeded all expectations. To have an impactful and rewarding year I recommend to: grow your network, push yourself out of your comfort zone, take challenges and face them head on and of course embrace our growth mindset culture.
What is the office atmosphere like?
The office atmosphere has a real buzz – you can tell you are at Microsoft. There offices have fantastic modern facilities and meetings can happen anywhere, from board rooms to bean bags and swings.
