What was the application process like?
The application process at Microsoft was very clear and transparent. The process was one of the simplest ones to go through as there was no online assessments. It was also enjoyable as everyone you spoke to at Microsoft were very friendly and welcoming.
What advice would you give to students applying for your role?
Be yourself and stay positive! The Business Program Manager role is a great role where you can bring your own style of working to it so make sure that you express this within your application, whether it be through volunteering or work experience.
How much responsibility do you have?
I was surprised at the level of trust and responsibility Microsoft has given me. I’ve been involved in various impactful projects, in which my manager has given me to own/lead on, so I’ve always felt the trust from the beginning which is very motivating.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
As the role is very dynamic, there is a lot of exposure to different parts of the business to get involved in and you’re not doing the same thing every day meaning you’re constantly learning. You will never find yourself getting bored!
What has been your biggest challenge?
The start of my placement was daunting as I was going into a big corporation, meaning there was a lot to learn (both the business and the tech). However, everyone at Microsoft is extremely helpful and are great mentors at helping you overcome challenges.
How has this experience exceeded your expectations?
I never imagined that I’d be able to gain as much knowledge and experience as much as I have. I’ve been able to get involved in stretch projects outside of my role – giving me the chance to engage with people I normally wouldn’t do in my core role.
What is the office atmosphere like?
The office is open plan making it spacious to work in. There are always other interns around so if you need some help you can ask them, embracing the sense of community. There’s also a nice outdoors where you can go and have lunch (during summer)!
What activities are there outside of work?
Microsoft has an Interns Committee ran by other interns, where they plan social events for the cohort to enjoy. There’s also the annual Christmas party where everyone from Microsoft UK comes along to which is quite spectacular!
