What’s been most interesting work you’ve been involved in so far?
One of the most interesting projects I’ve been involved in so far is my role as a Design Coordinator on the HS2 project. It’s incredibly exciting to be responsible for managing the design of four key assets, knowing they will soon be brought to life on one of the UK’s largest infrastructure projects.
What makes this role so rewarding is the collaboration involved. I get to work with talented colleagues from across many disciplines within Mott MacDonald, ensuring that all aspects of the design align seamlessly. Additionally, I have the opportunity to interact with the client and third-party stakeholders, building strong working relationships and ensuring the designs meet the needs of everyone involved.
Seeing a project of this scale come together—from detailed design to physical construction—is truly inspiring and has been a highlight of my career so far.
Have you been involved in anything in addition to you day job (for instance involvement with ECP network) and what does this involve?
In addition to my day job, I’ve been fortunate to take on several exciting external roles that allow me to give back to the industry and contribute to my local region. One highlight has been starting Building Equality in the West Midlands, where I now serve as the regional chair. This initiative focuses on promoting inclusion across the construction and rail industries, advocating for a workplace where everyone feels respected and valued. Mott MacDonald has been incredibly supportive of my work with Building Equality, recognising that fostering inclusion brings not only social value but also significant business benefits.
I’m also actively involved in the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Young Rail Professionals (YRP) committees. These roles have allowed me to develop my leadership and collaboration skills, while connecting with others who share my passion for shaping the future of our industry.
What I’ve appreciated most about Mott MacDonald is how it empowers early career professionals to take on opportunities like these. The company encourages us to grow our skills, build networks, and make a meaningful impact outside of our day-to-day roles. It’s a privilege to be part of an organization that values development, diversity, and giving back.
What attracted you to apply for a role with us?
What attracted me to Mott MacDonald was its strong reputation as a forward-thinking, people-focused company. The opportunity to work on transformational projects, like HS2, that shape the world we live in and deliver meaningful social outcomes was something I found incredibly inspiring.
I was also drawn to the company’s inclusive culture and the way it values young professionals. Mott MacDonald doesn’t just see early career professionals as employees—it actively invests in us, providing opportunities to grow, be challenged, and make a real impact from the start. Whether it’s through mentoring, leadership roles, or involvement in high-profile projects, the company empowers its people to thrive.
The combination of working on projects that create positive change, alongside a supportive and collaborative environment, made Mott MacDonald the ideal place to start my career.
What are the three things that make you look forward to coming into work each day?
Three things that make me look forward to coming into work each day are the exciting projects, the collaborative culture, and the opportunities to make a difference.
Firstly, working on transformational projects like HS2 is incredibly rewarding. Being a Design Coordinator and managing key assets allows me to see how my work contributes to shaping infrastructure that will impact generations to come.
Secondly, the collaborative and inclusive culture at Mott MacDonald makes every day engaging. I enjoy working across disciplines, learning from talented colleagues, and being supported by a company that truly values diversity and equality. My involvement in initiatives like Building Equality and the ICE and YRP committees reflects how much the company encourages us to grow and give back.
Lastly, the opportunity to create positive social outcomes through my work is deeply motivating. Whether it’s delivering designs that reduce environmental impacts or fostering inclusion in the industry, knowing my efforts contribute to meaningful change makes each day exciting.
What’s your team like?
My team is one of the best parts of working at Mott MacDonald. We’re a diverse group of talented professionals who are genuinely supportive of one another. Working in the Rail team, I collaborate daily with colleagues across multiple disciplines, from structural and drainage engineers to environmental specialists, all contributing their expertise to deliver complex projects like HS2.
What stands out about my team is the culture of collaboration and inclusivity. Everyone is approachable and willing to share their knowledge, which has been invaluable in my development as a graduate civil engineer.
It’s inspiring to work alongside people who are not only passionate about what they do but are also committed to making a positive difference through our work.
The recruitment process can be quite daunting. What advice would you give to other graduates/ placement students looking to join Mott MacDonald?
The recruitment process can feel daunting, but my advice is to focus on being yourself and showcasing your passions. Talk about what excites you, whether it’s a particular aspect of engineering, your interest in sustainability, or how you want to make a difference. Sharing what you’re passionate about will set you apart and show Mott MacDonald who you are beyond your qualifications.
Take the time to research the company—understand its values, projects, and commitment to delivering positive social outcomes. Highlight how your experiences and ambitions align with these, particularly if you’re passionate about improving the lives of communities through your work.
During the interview, don’t be afraid to ask questions and show curiosity. The process is as much about finding the right fit for you as it is for the company. Finally, trust in the supportive environment Mott MacDonald provides—your willingness to grow, learn, and contribute to meaningful projects is what truly matters.
What has been your favourite sports or social event?
My favourite must be the annual Mott MacDonald Sports Day, which in 2024 was held in Cardiff. Offices from across the company come together to compete in a variety of sports, including football, netball, and tug-of-war. It’s always a great opportunity to showcase teamwork and have fun in a friendly, competitive environment.
What made it even more special is that, working on large infrastructure projects, we often collaborate with colleagues from around the world. Sports Day provides a rare chance to meet many of them in person, strengthening those relationships beyond virtual meetings. The event really highlights the inclusive and connected culture at Mott MacDonald and reinforces the sense of community across the company.
