Owen - Software Engineer
Placement (10 Months+)
Before G-Research Iʼd completed internships at a few companies whilst studying Computer Science at the University of York. Here, Iʼve progressed from an intern to a graduate to an engineer, having worked on systems and technology core to the business my entire time. I currently work developing one of our core platforms which is used by our researchers and our clients every day. This involves writing code for new applications and features, providing support for and extending our current systems, and working with the rest of the team to help define our future architecture.
I think what makes G-Research stand out is how everyone works together across all teams to achieve our goals; everyone, no matter how new, can make a difference to the business.

For the past year, I have been a participant in the Women in Quant Finance Program at G-Research.
As a participant, I have attended multiple professional development events, where G-Research has provided me with the opportunity to learn about careers in quantitative finance and further my network in these fields. One of their multi-day events contained confidence building sessions, one-to-one speed networking, and communication workshops. Each day I was provided with the opportunity to advance a new skill and meet new likeminded women in STEM, who I could connect with personally and professionally.
From G-Research, I have learned more about what a career in Quantitative Finance may look like, especially for someone who has a physics and machine learning background. Prior to GResearch's events, I had no idea that this career path was an option for me. Now, I am heavily considering this as a future career path - either at G-Research or beyond.
Overall, I love how committed G-Research as a company is to improving their own diversity and increasing the number of women in quantitative finance roles. For a future student interested in quantitative finance roles, I would highly encourage them to apply for G-Research's Women in Quant Program or one of their many internship opportunities. They are a company filled with opportunities for learning and growth; I am grateful that they have provided me with so many great experiences without even having a permanent role at the company. If you are a student in STEM considering an alternate path to academia, I would highly recommend that you investigate opportunities with G-Research!
