R&D Chemistry Placement

DEPARTMENT – R&D Chemistry 

LOCATION – Chandlers Ford, site based 

WORKING HOURS – 37.5 hrs per week, Monday – Friday, 8:30-4:30 (start and finish times can be flexible)

We have an exciting opportunity for you to join a dynamic team as an R&D Chemistry Intern for a leading global manufacturer of contact lenses. 

Research and Development (R&D) is the center of all lens design, material, and process development within CooperVision leading to the creation of new product and process opportunities for the business. 

Working in the UK R&D chemistry team, you will support the research, development, and testing of novel materials and processes for contact lens products. It will involve designing, planning and the completion of experiments, hands-on work such as monomer preparation and material testing and then the analysis and reporting of results generated.

Essential functions & responsibilities:

  • Carries out daily lab operations and assists in performing lab experiments involving preparation of saline solutions, contact lens monomer mixtures and material testing of contact lenses. This includes techniques such as, UV-VIS spectroscopy, contact angle, mechanical and oxygen permeability testing.
  • Assists in planning, running, testing, and reporting of R&D trials.
  • Works effectively in a team environment and can interface with cross-functional teams.
  • Works independently when operating lab equipment following standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Makes detailed observations and maintains proper documentation and records of experimental work.
  • Ensures Health and Safety requirements are always met and never compromised. 
  • Performs data entry, data analysis, writing of technical reports and creates presentations.
  • Researches information for technological advancement to assist with project work.
  • Effectively communicates, both orally and in writing, with internal personnel and external partners.
  • Keeps others informed on project progress and issues.
  • Attends and participates in team and project meetings. 

What skills and experience should you have?

Qualifications

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple time sensitive requirements.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • General laboratory experience e.g. the use of balances, pipetting and following test methods.
  • Intellectual curiosity – reviewing information to uncover insights and implications relevant to R&D project work.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Education:

  • Studying for a closely related degree.
