Instrument & Control - Summer Internship 2025 (Aberdeen)

Overview of the Internship

Join bp for an 11-week summer internship, where you’ll be immersed in real-world projects that you’ll lead from start to finish. You’ll work closely with a dedicated line manager and a buddy from our early careers programme, providing you with mentorship and guidance throughout. Alongside your responsibilities, you’ll participate in social events with fellow interns, engage in training sessions to enhance your skills, and network with bp leaders. This programme will boost your technical knowledge and give you an in-depth view of life at bp.

Role and Responsibilities

As part of our Instrument & Control team, you’ll experience the critical role that automation and control engineering play in creating safe, efficient, and digitally secure energy solutions across bp’s diverse operations. From refineries and biofuels plants to offshore wind and hydrogen facilities, automation is at the core of bp’s energy production.

The role of an Instrumentation and Control Engineer at bp involves an extensive range of activities, including:

  • Designing and maintaining:
  • Process Control Systems
  • Safety Instrumented Systems
  • Fire and Gas Detection Systems
  • Field Instrumentation
  • Analyser Systems
  • Metering Systems
  • Telecommunication Networks
  • Security and Cybersecurity Systems

These systems collectively enhance safety, optimise production, and improve the reliability of bp’s global facilities.

What You’ll Be Doing

During your internship, your responsibilities may include:

  • Designing Control Systems: Creating and implementing control systems for diverse operations. One day, you might be determining the best way to control a biofuels reactor, and the next, installing advanced control systems for blue hydrogen production.
  • Working with Cutting-Edge Instrumentation: Learning to design and apply the latest in safety systems for production facilities across energy sectors, from refining and carbon capture to renewables.
  • Integrating Protection Systems: Collaborating on systems for electric vehicle integration, battery storage, or utilising miniature sensors for renewable energy solutions.
  • Utilising Wireless and IoT Technology: Supporting the development of industrial IoT systems and modernising legacy operations using wireless technology.
  • Collaborating with Global Teams: Working with bp’s diverse team of engineers on automation projects that span our facilities worldwide. Automation touches nearly every part of bp’s energy network, even extending to secure control systems for rapid battery charging solutions.

Why bp?

This internship offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in automation, a field at the heart of bp’s mission to safely and sustainably power the world. As an Instrument & Control intern, you’ll develop valuable technical and interpersonal skills, connect with experts across the industry, and explore future-focused energy solutions. Join us and see where a career in automation at bp could lead.
