Early Careers Experience at bp
Our summer internships are 11 weeks. You’ll be based in one team throughout your internship, working on real projects that you’ll be able to manage through to completion. Throughout you’ll have the support of a dedicated line manager and a buddy from one of our early careers programs. Alongside your day-to-day responsibilities, you’ll have the opportunity to attend events and socials with other interns, take part in training sessions to help develop your interpersonal skills and network with leaders from across bp. The program is designed to help build your skills and technical knowledge whilst also allowing you to learn more about life at bp.
Role and Responsibilities
Automation includes a range of engineering subdisciplines including instrumentation, process control, safety systems, communications and cyber security. It enables digitally secure, safe, reliable and optimal control of complex energy facilities, which include our oil refineries and biofuels plants, oil and gas production facilities, green and blue hydrogen production, on-shore and off-shore wind, solar and integrated mobility solutions.
The Instrumentation and Control engineer’s job cover a wide range of topics including design and maintenance of:
- Process Control Systems
- Safety Instrumented Systems
- Fire and Gas Systems
- Field Instrumentation
- Analyser Systems
- Metering Systems
- Telecommunications Systems and Networks
- Security Systems
- Automation Systems Cyber Security
All of the above is in support of enhancing safety, optimising production, and improving reliability of our diverse facilities across the globe.
Roles and responsibilities:
As an Intern you could find yourself:
Designing and building process plant control systems, which means incredible variety. One day you could be working out the best way to control a biofuels reactor, the next you could be working on installing an advanced control system (a kind of autopilot) for blue hydrogen production.
Working with the latest sensing, measurement & analysis instrument technologies; learning design and application of safety instrumented systems in production, refining, pipelines, carbon capture, hydrogen generation, biofuels and renewable energy facilities
Integrating instrument and protection systems for electric vehicles, battery charging and storage systems or working with miniature sensors to develop energy systems integrating wind, solar and green hydrogen energy.
Working with the latest wireless technology to support development and use of industrial IoT as we build new energy systems and modernise our legacy operations.
Working with an incredibly diverse and distributed team of experienced engineers with a global perspective. Automation touches everything in bp, even our rapid battery charging solutions require cyber secure safe control systems. Who knows where this could lead?
Requirements
To apply for this role, you must be in your penultimate year of study (those going onto an MEng and PhD students can apply), and be on track for a 2:1 from the below:
- Electrical & electronic Engineering
- Electrical Power Engineering
- Automation & Control Engineering
- Electronic & Electrical Engineering with Control focus
- Instrumentation & Control
- Electrical and Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering with Energy
You are also expected to have strong spoken and written English language skills, including business and technical English. Language skills will be assessed throughout the recruitment process.

Bp Sunbury - ICBT (International Centre for Business & Technology), Chertsey Road, Sunbury on Thames, Middlesex, TW16 7LN
Start & End Dates
23rd June to 5th September 2025
Please note: Our internships are full-time. If you will struggle to be available for these dates &/or may not be able to work full time, please flag this if you are invited to a technical interview, or earlier if possible.

Reward
Salary: £35,200 p.a. (prorated for the duration of your internship)
