Throughout the internship, you’ll have support from a dedicated line manager and a buddy from our early careers programs. You will also have the chance to attend networking events, training sessions, and socials with other interns to develop interpersonal skills and connect with bp leaders. This internship is designed to build your technical expertise and provide valuable insight into working at bp.

Role and Responsibilities

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern at bp, your role will involve ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of our operations across a variety of mechanical engineering projects. Your specific responsibilities will be tailored to your skills and the needs of the business, but core duties will include:

  • Maintaining Team and Company Performance: Ensuring that projects are delivered efficiently and maintaining high standards of operational performance.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Building relationships across bp, working with internal teams and external partners to deliver excellence.
  • Commitment to Safety: Demonstrating the bp values with a strong focus on safety, which is fundamental to our engineering approach.

In this role, you’ll gain exposure to the full spectrum of mechanical engineering, including supporting operations and projects by working in diverse teams to select, specify, and construct mechanical systems and equipment for both new facilities and existing assets. You’ll also contribute to the creation and implementation of maintenance programs, monitor equipment condition and performance, and address operational challenges. Additionally, some engineers focus on specific areas of mechanical engineering, providing expertise on new technologies, mechanical designs, and equipment performance.

You'll work with a wide range of mechanical equipment, such as compressors, pumps, turbines, heaters, valves, vessels, and piping. At bp, you’ll use cutting-edge technology and collaborate with industry experts to uphold the highest standards of mechanical integrity.
