We are looking for an enthusiastic Aftertreatment Integration Development student to join our team specializing in Engineering for our CES ONHWY Performance business unit in Darlington. During your placement with us, you will learn how a major global organization operates, gaining the tools and exposure you will need to become an expert in the industry and power your potential!  

This role is available to candidates who qualify for a placement year and will commence 7th July 2025, this placement is 100% site-based.

External Qualifications and Competencies

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways: 

  • Support the Cummins Value Package Introduction Process used to bring new engine and aftertreatment systems to market. Work as part of a team to complete activities such as catalyst and hardware selection, performance evaluation, mapping and proof of concept testing, control system & diagnostic tuning and field test data analysis (exact spread of activities will depend on where we are in a development cycle during your placement)
  • Procure and manage prototype and controls lab inventory and manage shipment of parts between different test facilities
  • Work with Test Operations function to produce test instructions, scripts and logging files for engine dynamometer testing and pilot vehicle testing. Analyse test cell, pilot vehicle and field test data to evaluate hardware and software performance for a variety of different test types and scenarios
  • Support cross functional design reviews for hardware, software and diagnostic tuning by providing review packs, including requirements definition, tuning rationale and test results and participating in the review meetings
  • Simulate diagnostic and control system performance using Simulink, MATLAB and HIL test benches to evaluate tuning decisions and calibration robustness, as well as evaluating sensor and actuator performance
  • Support occasional vehicle testing, including logging data on both stationary and mobile testing. This role is hands-on, you will be given the opportunity to carry out testing and support operators in equipment installation and trouble shooting

Additional Responsibilities Unique to this Position

To be successful in this role you will need the following: 

  • We are looking for a wide range of applicants studying towards a Bachelor’s or Master's degree from across all Engineering & STEM related subjects
  • Good knowledge of MATLAB & MS office (excel and word)
  • Methodical and data-based approach to problem solving, Strong team working skills and communication skills
  • Knowledge of Diesel engine and/or Aftertreatment architecture an advantage but not essential – training will be provided
