Entry requirements
- ARB (Architect’s Registration Board)-prescribed Part 1 qualification or Part 1 equivalent as prescribed by the ARB
- Candidates in their final year of study must be on track to achieve a minimum of a 2:2 in a degree prescribed by the ARB
- Must not already hold or be working towards a qualification at the same level or higher in a closely related subject

Job overview
The Built Environment & Architecture team in TfL Engineering works across all modes of transport in TfL with Architectural, Civil Engineering, and Urban Landscape projects. Examples of ongoing projects include:
- London Underground Station enhancements
- Modernisation of Victoria Coach Station
- Staff Welfare programme upgrading and building new facilities
- Commercial development of assets, e.g., railway arches
Duties may include:
- On-site works on major projects
- Preparation of feasibility reports
- Design work related to infrastructure projects
- Preparation of detailed design packages
- Developer-led third-party schemes
- Refurbishment schemes undertaken by maintenance teams
- Working in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver infrastructure projects
Sustainability
Guided by TfL Corporate Environment Plan (CEP), sustainability is embedded in TfL’s ethos and work towards Net Zero Carbon in 2030. Ongoing activities include developing a Built Environment Strategy informed by CEP and industry best practices, ensuring sustainable operations to protect and regenerate the natural world.
What will I be doing?
Your 4-year development programme will include placement rotations across different transport modes and projects. Duties include:
- Gaining experience through design and delivery phases
- Completing at least 1 year in total within an area for the RIBA Part III case study component
- Running a case study project under mentor supervision
- Engaging in shared learning events where RICS and RIBA overlap
What Qualifications will I gain?
- Postgraduate qualification in architecture (RIBA Part 2) prescribed by the ARB
- Postgraduate qualification in architecture (RIBA Part 3) prescribed by the ARB
Upon completion, you are eligible to join the ARB Register of Architects and the register of Chartered Architects (RIBA).
