We run an eight-week paid summer internship programme in our Actuarial Consulting team that offers first class training and work experience. Enabling you to gain an excellent understanding of the role a consultant undertakes within the firm, how our business operates and the opportunity to learn from our Partners and dedicated mentors.

The internship will be across our Actuarial Consulting business area, an indication on the work you will be involved with is detailed below:

The Actuarial Consulting team provides a variety of actuarial services to defined benefit pension schemes in the private sector and to public sector pension schemes, which are still open to new people joining and have a long-time horizon.

We help our clients understand and manage the key risks and considerations associated with running their pension scheme. You will be given real responsibility to contribute to client work, actuarial calculations and projects.

Who are we looking for?

Our current summer internship vacancies require for you to be on track for a minimum 2:1 degree, A at A-Level or Higher Maths and Level 6 at GCSE English Language or B at Scottish National 5, (or other equivalent qualifications), we require dedicated individuals with a strong academic background who are dynamic, proactive and have excellent communication skills. Do let us know if any extenuating circumstances have prevented you from achieving the above qualifications, there will be opportunity for you to share this information as part of our screening process.

Next steps:

Once you submit your CV and answer our screening questions. You will be invited to complete a series of online tests and a short video interview. (PLEASE CHECK YOUR JUNK/SPAM REGULARLY!)

The video interview is an important part of the process as we will get an idea of your motivations and interest in working at Barnett Waddingham. You will be able to find lots of hints & tips with regards to recording a video interview online, but for ease we've outlined a few below:

  • Focus on answering the questions and avoid being too vague.
  • Do your research on BW and know about the professional qualifications that we offer.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for the role.
  • Pay attention to presentation – be aware of your background and what is on display in the video.
  • Try to use the correct terminology ie. I want to work as an Actuary instead of I want to work as an Actuarial or I want to work in Actuary .

The recruitment process takes place throughout the winter/early spring and we're organising all our assessment days in March 2025. Please note, for some offices we will be recruiting on a rolling basis and encourage you to apply as soon as you're ready.

Please be aware, if a particular opportunity becomes oversubscribed, we will close it for applications before the stated deadline. Therefore, we recommend you submit your full application as early as possible.

We look forward reviewing your application!

“My actuarial internship at Barnett Waddingham was a great experience. I was exposed to a variety of tasks, from member calculations and data checking, to drafting reports and planning team socials! The opportunity to collaborate with talented, friendly colleagues and contribute to meaningful projects inspired me to return as a graduate. I look forward to continuing growing alongside such an amazing team.” (Henna – London)

“My internship at BW was the perfect transition from university to the workplace, giving me invaluable hands-on experience in member calculations, contributing to actuarial projects, and gaining insight into complex pension concepts, helping me develop real-world skills and applications for my knowledge from day one. It provided an incredible foundation for an actuarial career, along with giving me a more focused drive ahead of my final year of studying.” (Alex – Amersham)

“The internship and Barnett Waddingham gave me great exposure to the actuarial profession and pensions industry. Whilst working with the AC team I had the opportunity to work on real client work such as drafting reports and calculating transfer values which helped me to gain a real understanding of the work. I also got to know more about the actuarial exams and the support that BW offer through formal training sessions and chatting to colleagues who were at various stages of the exam process. Everyone in the office is very friendly and really keen to help you develop your skills, it is also a very sociable office which I loved. The training and work that I completed within the actuarial team during my internship made me realise that an actuarial profession was the career path I would like to follow, and the work culture and socials let me know that BW was a place I could see myself thriving.” (Emma – Glasgow)
