Sustainability Assistant Placement
Are you interested in working on a nationally-significant project? Metlen Energy & Metals and its consortium partner GE-Vernova are one of the main contractors on Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1).
EGL1 is a £1.3bn project that is being jointly developed by SP Energy Networks and National Grid Electricity Transmission.
It will provide a new high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable link from Torness, in East Lothian, to Hawthorn Pit (between Murton and South Hetton) in County Durham.
Converter stations and new substations are required onshore at each end - our consortium will be constructing the converter stations.
As a Sustainability Assistant, you'll work closely with the Sustainability Manager and advisors to help improve the project’s sustainability performance at our Hawthorn Pit site.
Your role will include supporting the sustainability team, working with various construction teams and project stakeholders, auditing and measuring sustainability efforts, helping with reports, sharing best practice, co-ordinating sustainability activities on the project, and promoting sustainable practices on-site.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with day-to-day development and implementation of sustainability strategies on a large construction site
- Deliver sustainability and carbon-related toolbox talks / briefings
- Help monitor sustainability performance metrics, including, but not limited to, carbon emissions, waste generation, and energy consumption
- Support the Sustainability Manager in the preparation of reports for stakeholders
- Gather data related to sustainability initiatives, to support decision making-making processes
- Collaborate with contractors, subcontractors, to promote awareness and participate in sustainability programmes
- Support the Sustainability Manager in developing and delivering training sessions for site personnel on sustainability practices and policies
- Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in sustainability management relevant to construction
- Carry out weekly sustainability audits
- Support the delivery of project Sustainability Key Performance Indicators.
What we’re looking for:
This placement is suited to candidates studying an engineering-related degree, e.g. Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or an environment-related degree, e.g. Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering.
You’ll have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be self-motivated. You’ll also have a driving licence and have your own transport to get to and from site.
