The Role
It was an overall exciting and fruitful experience. I was lucky enough to be given an interesting project to work on. I was also surrounded by very helpful teammates, who provided guidance as well as made sure that I understand the infrastructure of the bank and the purpose of my work.
I think me and my work are appreciated by my team. One of the first things I was told once I started my internship was to question everything. JP Morgan values fresh ideas and hopes for new joiners to bring innovation. So I was always heard and all my questions were welcomed and answered.
I was given several projects to start off (I had to come up with several myself). At the beginning of the internship I also had a conversation with my manager about my deliverables. My manager was keeping track of my progress, even though I was given quite a lot of flexibility and freedom in my day-to-day work.
I was moderately busy. I had a lot of work, but I wasn't overwhelmed. I assume I was working hard because I was genuinely interested in my work. Quite a lot of my time was also consumed in various networking or learning events for interns, new joiners or employees in general.
I was given a responsibility to be accountable for my actions. I was also doing quite a lot of decisions on my own. My projects were not risky; hence I was given space to be innovative and original with them.
I was given an opportunity to enhance both my technical and soft skills over the internship. I was working on soft skills sessions with one of my teammates. This is a transferable thing which will most certainly be useful in any industry. On top of that, I also learned a lot of technicalities as far as software or infrastructure of an investment bank is concerned.
The Company
I was working in a small office, I think it influenced the atmosphere quite a lot. Everyone knows each other and is more than willing to help. The atmosphere was very friendly, people are having lunches in groups, going for drinks after work etc. And all interns were welcome to join this community.
I’d say it was well organised. My main projects were given by my managed who’d come up with them before I joined. He also contacted me beforehand. Interns had an induction day where so many formalities were explained. HR was also keeping in touch constantly to track my progress, clear uncertainties etc.
I think I didn’t get the whole sense of how much JP Morgan is willing to invest. Nevertheless, interns definitely got a taster session. First off, there is quite a lot of internal online training. Some of the classes are on sites. I personally was having soft skills sessions with one of my team members.

Healthcare from home
I think JP Morgan is a great employer for graduates. The graduate scheme offers flexibility to rotate to different roles, the salary is good, healthcare is also covered. On top of everything, it is a great thing to put off your chest job applications on your last year of uni!
The Culture
A good thing about JP Morgan is that there are as many graduate scheme places as there are interns so no one was competing amongst each other! All the interns that I met were very friendly and helpful, to be honest, I became really good friends with some of them.
I worked in Central London which is rather expensive. I decided to live in zone 3 to save up some money and I think it affected my socialising a lot as I was always worried about the last tubes home! I would recommend investing in a fun summer.
There aren't a lot of places in Canary Wharf (apart from pubs).
There were quite a lot of events available for interns outside work. There was a volunteering event especially for interns. Another event I participated in was JP Morgan Corporate Challenge which was most certainly one of the highlights of my internship. Lastly, there were intern initiations; interns themselves created a proactive and friendly community.
