About You
I had a really good time. I thought the balance of independent work to social events, talks and workshops was good - there was enough time to actually get something done on your own but also the days felt varied and it wasn't just sitting in an office all day. I had a great time with the other vacation scheme students and everyone from HSF I worked with was very friendly.
Very much, I really felt like everyone wanted me to have a great time and like the firm. My supervisors gave up a lot of time not only to help me with work but also to take me out for lunch/coffee, chat to me and answer lots of questions. The graduate recruitment were also very nice and paid a lot of attention to how we were getting on.
I was given quite a lot of work to do independently, which I enjoyed. If I did have any issues it was very easy to check things with my supervisors because I was sharing an office with them.
I don't think anything I learned at Herbert Smith Freehills was that relevant to my academic work, although my great experience in the IP department has helped me decide that I definitely want to take an IP module in final year. I'm sure it will be helpful in my career once I leave university though.
The Company
Very well, we were given a comprehensive timetable on the first day and events were spread out over the three weeks quite evenly.
Very friendly and laid back.
It must be a lot, given the amount of time people were ready to spend helping us on the scheme.
I think I have a fair idea now although it is difficult to see how it would be similar to/different from other firms.
Quite a lot, I found the culture was more relaxed than you would expect from a stereotypical City firm, which I really liked.
I am still considering my options for my career after graduating but this has definitely given me some really useful information to go on, and made clear that working for HSF would be a great job.
Everything Else
£350 a week (about enough to cover expenses of staying in London but not much over)
Yes, lots, including partners and associates who came to the social events as well as trainees.
Lots of fun with a good range of different things.
A bit, although I'm sure it would have been easy for me to find out more about sports teams etc.
Yes, definitely!
