The Role
I really enjoyed my internship. The work was stimulating and interesting. I learnt a lot of new things and I believe that my programming ability has come on a lot. I got on well with the people I was working with and I felt that they were very helpful when I had questions about what I was doing.
Although I was only at MetaSwitch Networks for a short length of time, 11 weeks, I felt that I was valued by my colleagues. I felt that the work which I did during my internship was useful and was real work, not a project cobbled together whose only purpose was to provide work for an intern.
I felt that I was given a lot of support. I had a manager and a mentor. My mentor answered my questions on a day to day basic about problems I was having with low level code while I talked to my manager about the high level aspects of the projects I was working on.
I felt that I always had work to do. There was no time during my internship where I was sitting around not doing anything becuase I had not got any work to do. However I did not feel overburdened or overwhelmed with the quantity of work which I had to do.
I think that I was given a lot of responsibilty. For a project, I had to come up with a system level and high level design. Then once it was agreed with my manager, I was given the freedom and flexibility to implement it in whatever order that I wanted. I was also responsible for testing my code and checking that it worked.
I have not fully decided what area I want to go into in later life. However, whatever field I go into, the techinal skills which I have picked up during my internship at MetaSwitch networks will stand me in good stead. I feel that my programming ability has come on a lot. I feel that my communication skills have also improved.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was very positve. I thought that everyone was very friendly and welcoming. When arrived and when I left, the company gave a tab at a local pub for me and the team I was in. I thought that things like this made it much easier to become friendly with the people in the team I was in.
The internship was very well organised by HR. Throughout my internship, I stayed in a company house The rent was very heavily subsided by the company. I felt that the office services who dealt with issues relating to the company houses were very approachable and efficient. For example in my last week I had to move from one company house to another. They moved all my bags for me while I was at work, saving me having to move them myself.
I felt that the company really developed my technical computing skills. I came to the company with very limited computing skills and over the course of the internship, my ability came on a lot. They ran at lunchtimes sessions on computing topics which were very useful. Further HR ran a presentation and feedback session designed at improving your communication skills which I thought was very useful.

In my opinion, going back and working for the company is very appealing. I think that it is a very good company to work for. I think that the work is very interesting, the training you receive is very good and the people there are very friendly. It just depend on whether or not I decide that I want to work in software development after I finish my degree. I have not fully decided what area I want to go into yet
The Culture
I felt that there was a goof social scene amongst my fellow interns. Everyone was very friendly.
Cheap becuase we were staying in company houses which were heavily subsidised by the company.
