The Role
My Placement at Virgin Media has been really rewarding and enjoyable. The atmosphere and culture here is one of a kind. Unlike most corporate firms, it’s quite relaxed but productivity and efficiency are emphasised. I had many opportunities to travel across the UK, where I was working and networking with lots of talented individuals and of course, using the opportunity to explore the different cities
I was given real responsibilities very early on, working on various projects that fed directly to senior management. My colleagues were very appreciative and supportive whenever I was tasked to produce any piece of work and in general
Support and guidance were always available to me. My manger in particular spent quite some time with me when I first started which helped getting to grips with the structure and operations of the business and also with my daily activities. It was great being sat across each other which meant I could always ask for help whenever needed. I was also assigned a buddy who I could speak to and ask the not-so important questions an intern would have and also to talk to on a more informal level. Aside from that, the people of VM are very approachable and always willing to help in general.
For my role in particular, it varied from day to day. Some days I found myself to be extremely busy and other days, quieter than usual
From the very first week after my induction and getting to know everyone, I was introduced to the forecasting models used within the team and I had to familiarise myself with it. This was a huge thing as it contributed massively to projects that were on-going within the company, so I could see how our work impacted the business. I was also tasked with managing media licenses used across VM which again was a massive responsibility in itself. All in all I was given a great deal of responsibilities which really helped with my development.
My role was predominately excel based and as a result of using it on a daily basis, I developed enormously. Communication and networking were vital as I had to deal with a lot of people in order to accomplish my daily activities. Moving forward from this, I can apply these skills to my studies especially in a group situation
The Company
Very relaxed environment and everyone is friendly and easy to get on with. You tend to settle in very quickly
Overall the placement was fairly organised
From the get-go, I was introduced to VM’s online studying platform Ignite, which had a variety of courses available to me.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
National Travel
Financial Bonus
Working from home
Healthcare/Dental
VM have a vast number of graduate schemes in place, ranging from Finance to Engineering, so there’s something for everyone.
The Culture
As interns we all got along seamlessly
I commuted from home for my placement year but based on the reaction of other interns that lived local, it’s not as expensive as London.
Football, Go-karting. Also you’re welcome to introduce any activities you are interested in.
