The Role
Very enjoyable work, although so much of it is dependant upon who you are sat with and what their workload is like.
I had partners walk up to me and introduce themselves, and was sat next to one on multiple occasions. That wouldn't happen at other city firms. CMS has a reputation for friendly staff and I was not disappointed.
You are assigned a buddy (another trainee) who was usually on hand to answer questions, but there's no handholding or baby steps. They also are very busy.
I had enough work to keep me busy, and on the odd occasion where there was no work, I would ask around and find some.
I was given a piece of research the outcome of which had strong influence on the financial exposure of our client to their litigation. I did the research and sat with a senior associate for a few hours discussing the law surrounding the area. Fascinating, and yes it went to the client.
Some experience in a real-life law adds so much context to the experience of studying academic law.
The Company
As with most City firms, the office is a fairly serious place.
I was on the Bristol placement which is a week in London and a week in Bristol. The week in London was seamless, however during the week in Bristol there was a couple of occasion where we were left wondering what the plans were.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
The Culture
London is pricey, Bristol is cheap.
Both the City and Bristol are great for that kind of thing.
Lots of pro bono and sports activity
