The Role
Even though accountancy has a boring stereotype, each day was varied and throughly enjoyable.
Everyone was really friendly and helpful. There are a lot of graduates in the firm so it was very sociable and there was a very relaxed atmosphere in the office.
My programme was well structured and I had continual appraisals and feedback. I was given a 'buddy' and 'counselling manager' who made sure that I was okay and had things to do.
There is always something to do, even if it isn't the most exciting of jobs. Generally the work is very enjoyable and the people around you make it a very social atmosphere.
I was able to complete sections of accounts on my own, talk to clients and conduct stocktakes. It was great to be given a lot of responsibility straight away.
I knew nothing about accounting before this placement and I now know enough to conduct a fairly substantial part of an audit and preparation of accounts.
The Company
Everyone is very sociable, there are always cakes and sweets from peoples holidays and birthdays. There are social drinks provided by the firm on the first Friday of each month and there is a big basket of fresh fruit in the office to help yourself.
This was the first year that BDO had run the scheme. We were given a week's training in London with all the interns from across the country and provided with our own laptops. When I got to the placement I had a schedule planned for me and there was also another week in London. The firm pays for hotels and travel as well as a #20 a night meal allowance.
A lot, due to the fact we were in London for two weeks in total and all provided with laptops.
Flexi Time
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
There are so many areas to become involved in; audit, corporate finance, business restructuring and tax and also international locations to choose from. The fact that BDO is not a Big 4 firm means that you are more important to them and have more immediate opportunities.
The Culture
Yes, we went to London for two weeks which was very sociable. Even though there were only 2 interns in Birmingham we quickly built up relationships with the graudates.
I lived at home so I only had to pay for my train travel. In London the firm pays for return travel, a nice hotel, meals and travel while you are down there. You are also paid 40p a mile if you have to drive to a client.
Birmingham city centre, what more can I say?!?
There was a national BDO football tournament where all the staff from around the country went and stayed in Nottingham for the weekend. The firm provides drinks once a month and people are often popping out for lunch, dinner and drinks, particularly on a friday. Social e-mails are always sent to evryone in the office and everyone is always welcome.
