The Role
The experience has been fantastic. The office is a great environment to work in and the people are extremely welcoming. I got the chance to use new computer software, something that I was hoping I would have to chance to. Having chance to work on real projects, and not just ones in this country was really rewarding.
From the first week of the placement I was given work to do which showed to me that they had faith in my abilities. I have had chance to work with several different people from the company and also in different offices, so overall I felt highly valued by my colleagues.
If I ever had any problems with anything, Rob would give me a hand and make time for me. If for whatever reason he couldn't he would always point me in the direction of someone who could, so I never felt isolated. Everyone I worked with was very accepting in the event I didn't fully understand something.
Definitely the perfect balance, I never felt rushed to complete anything, and I was always given plenty of notice of any upcoming deadlines. Some of the time I would have to look up things and do some research on my own to fully understand what I was doing, so this also kept me busy.
Just the right amount I believe. I still didn't have the confidence to fully ensure everything I was doing was 100% correct, but towards the end of the placement my confidence was definitely increasing, and it has shown me that when I do eventually begin a career in engineering, I will be able to do it.
Towards the end I was doing work on vibrations in buildings, and in my final year at university I am about to do several modules in this topic. So the placement will help massively. Also the general experience of working in an office has been great experience that has given me confidence for the future.
The Company
Very friendly and welcoming. Everyone manages to work hard and also maintain a really relaxed atmosphere. Everyone was really easy to get on with, and we also went out for drinks on a Friday which gave me chance to get to know them all better. A really great bunch of people, and the office itself is lovely,
Fantastic organisation throughout. I never felt I had to chase anyone for information and they managed to get my job to start and finish exactly when I wanted it to. My desk was all set up for me as soon as I arrived and there was work already for me to start on from the first day.
I feel they definitely wanted me to improve as an engineer, and Rob encouraged me to understand all the work I was doing rather than just get through it. This made me feel valued and also that they thought it was worthwhile me becoming better. He also ensured that the work I was doing was work I was interested in, so would enjoy.
Company Parties/Events
I would love to return and work for them, after speaking to Rob there may be an opportunity to return, so I will be applying in October. As a company they have been great to work for and after having 8 weeks there it would be nice to return as I know I like the company.
The Culture
I knew one of them from university but as a group of placement's we didn't really make the effort to go out. As an office as a whole we did go out though which was great.
Leeds is relatively cheap with it being in the North, Its very near to where I grew up so pretty much in line with what I expected, and I already knew the city beforehand anyway so knew where the cheaper and more expensive places were. There's so much variety, there's something for all price ranges.
Leeds has a great nightlife, loads of clubs and bars, With it being a city with multiples universities and colleges, its full of students. This results in a fantastic variation of nightlife. We went out to a bar for drinks with the people from work which was great to get to know them better.
There were opportunities to do thing like runs, but that's not really my thing to be honest. But the opportunities are undoubtedly there.
