The Role
The work, while being very different to my field of study, was really interesting, and the team I was placed in were really fun to work with.
Work done was greatly appreciated, and as the year developed I was beginning to take full responsibility for some project areas.
I was supplied an industrial mentor, however I didn't really feel the need to speak with him. My supervisor in the office was very helpful and supportive day to day.
Occassional lulls in activity were quickly followed by a manic few weeks as a deliverable approached. On the whole quite balanced.
Gradually given more responsibility, to the point of running whole sections of a project, including developing and optimising products, sourcing suppliers/manufacturers, and managing the construction and testing of equipment.
Mostly unrelated to my degree, as this department is electronics based. Built up CAD modelling skills, as well as practical knowledge of the defence industry, which are both potentially very useful.
The Company
Mostly very positive, with a good selection of colleagues who I got on well with.
Support from a dedicated HR member helped with all aspects of setting up the placement, whilst supervisor helped with all aspects of reporting back to university and attending to my requirements.
Many courses and training days provided. These included a basic introduction to missiles for all new undergraduates/graduates, plus a department course on advanced electronics. Also encouraged an activity of tutoring secondary school pupils in the principles of flight for a glider building contest.

Have discussed this with my supervisor, and he would like me to return after graduating.
The Culture
Fellow graduates and undergraduates socialise frequently, with around 30 more joining each year.
Accommodation in Bristol is reasonable, around £300 per person per month. Socialising is average for a large city, but there are many student facilities offering discounts for students.
Bristol has a large student population, so nightlife is well catered for, particularly in the city centre.
