The Role
My work placement was a challenging and career building year, which continued to help me build myself and gain experience in a real- life job. I met lots of other graduates who i was able to share experiences with, and learn more about such a large organisation. The only aspect which i didn't like about the job was living at home and commuting for 3 hours in total in one day!
I did feel valued by my colleagues, although at times i think my faith in myself was what stood me back. If I was to do my placement year again, I would make sure I grab every opportunity my colleagues offer me to jump in at the deep end, and also learn from them. Experience is everything, and learning from others is such a great way to help better to tasks and also learn about other situations.
I was given lots of support from management and supervisors, and with regular weekly meetings, I was able to establish the tasks for the week to be done and talk through and issues. If I ever needed to speak to someone, my manager would always ensure she was there and I have lots to Thank her for.
During certain times of the month I was busy, based on the time of the year. Having regular meetings to stay on top of this, and staying organised myself helped me to plan what was necessary. The good thing about GSK is there is always something to do and get involved in!
My responsibility grew over my placement year. I started off with small responsibilities which then grew to larger responsibilities, involving creating slides for Andrew Witty- the CEO of GSK. Having this responsibility was great, as it made me realise my abilities to do tasks and the confidence my team members had in me.
Hugely. Although I realised that perhaps the job role wasn't for me, and that my career path actually wasn't going to go down the route I thought it would, it seriously opened my eyes to the working world. What I had learnt at university could be put in practice, and the experience will be one I wouldn't change. I learnt my strengths and my weaknesses.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office could be quite quiet when everyone was working hard, although this is to be expected in a work/ office environment. Although everyone was very friendly and welcoming. Always willing to say hello and help especially being an intern. There were also areas where you could chat and meet up downstairs in the canteen for lunch.
My work placement was setup well, and was very organised. There were some factors however which couldn't be planned, although it was important to be flexible and resilient in times of change.
Lots. There were lots of opportunities to help develop yourself, and the best advice i can give is to make sure you grab them! Keep a journal of everything you do.

They are very appealing. Working for such a large organisation such as GSK holds numerous opportunities. This is really appealing to me, as working in an organisation which is so flexible to changing and developing their people is great. I love their core beliefs, which I feel would match well with mine in the working world.
The Culture
Yes, there were regular meet ups and social events to attend. Regular newsletters and emails informed us about new things going on and what to expect! When everybody joined, there were undergraduate nights out to get to know everyone and socials, as well as a meal for christmas and an end of term boat party.
Due to my family living in London, I decided to live at home to save money. The commuting took quite a large amount every week from my wage, although the costs in the area were similar to that of london prices. Friends told me the cost of living was typical london prices, and not anything unusual.
Going to London would be adviced!
Yes as a gym bunny, there were lots of opportunities for me to get involved with classes and activities. I joined the very cheap monthly gym and could go to classes before and after i finished work. There was often time for me to go spinning on a Friday afternoon when the offices were quieter.
