The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at GSK. They have 4 key values; patient focus, integrity, respect and transparency these really do emanate through the company forming a friendly, collaborative and creative environment. Colleagues are incredibly friendly and keen to help in any way they can. All decisions are made with the patient at the end of the supply chain in mind. A truly patient-focused and friendly company.
I worked on a project over the 9 weeks, of which I had complete ownership and responsibility. This project was one that was valuable to my department and they therefore immediately wanted to help me as much with it as possible and has a vested interest in the outcome.
Each employee at GSK has a line manager who monitors your progress on the project, but also personal and professional development. My manager sat a few desks away and was always on hand for help and advice, but equally understood when to encourage independent learning.
My time was very much self-managed, having complete ownership of the project meant that I scheduled my own meetings and structured my time. My project required me to meet as many people as possible, whilst also having time to compile the report.
I had complete ownership and responsibility for my project; preparing an educational pack on the different ways we measure the performance of our supply chain and how we can become more patient-focused and best in class.
Coming from a science background I have learnt a lot about working in business and also supply chain. I am now more confident in meeting new people, running meetings and presenting but am also now sure that a career in business, as opposed to research, is for me. Not only do you acquire skills, there is also the opportunity to meet new people and build working relationships that will remain far beyond the end of your time with GSK.
The Company
Hot-desking encouraged a very friendly, collaborative and creative environment. A hard-working team but had a good range of ages ensuring there was some light relief!
The supply chain internship is a relatively new programme therefore there is ongoing improvement, but in general a very well run and organised experience.
There were plenty of opportunities; a training day on supply chain from APICS, visits to manufacturing sites, tour of an elite sports science research facility and shopper science lab (with the largest touch screen in Europe!) More training available on the graduate scheme.

GSK are keen to retain people they have invested in. At the end of the internship there's the opportunity to apply for fast-track through the application for the graduate scheme, also build relationships and contacts for direct entry routes.
The Culture
Yes, we organised drinks after work and also went for dinner. There are a few networking events organised by GSK but emphasis also on organising your own trips and activities.
Relatively expensive, due to being in London.
Whilst there are a few pubs, Brentford is relatively quiet, liked meeting in central london for social events.
Good working hours mean it's possible to also partake in activities alongside working. There is also a gym and a few squash courts.
