    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The summer internship was extremely well organised and so right from the off I felt like we were wanted. My team on Credit were extremely friendly and everyone was willing to give their time whilst on the desk to ensure you learnt as quickly as possible. The intern group all worked and socialised together, making the collaborative projects, such as producing newsletters and presentations, enjoyable. When you a learning at such a fast pace and being submerged into a job, you can't help but enjoy it really. The opportunity to rotate between desks was also great as it ensured that we were always learning a different side to the bank/business area.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Extremely. Although as an intern you aren't going to be producing world beating work, they still gave me the opportunity to help and gain understanding with research projects/trade ideas, They also allowed us the opportunity to discuss what they were doing as they were doing it, allowing you to submerge yourself as a Sales/Trader, whether it be listening to client calls or discussing reasons for trades.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • As an intern you will be assigned a buddy (young employee usually who has been on the summer internship) who you can go to at any point. The management are also there for you, and even though they may be heading up the desk they will still make time for you.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This varied on a daily basis. There were some days were you had time to do your extra research into things that have come up in discussions or in research meetings. However, there were also days were you had 3/4 projects to do, and then also a presentation/newsletter to complete, resulting in you either staying late or occasionally coming in on a weekend.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As an intern I was given a few adminny/communication tasks, such as collating and printing the daily axe sheets for morning meetings, however beyond that we were not expected to do much else. However, I see this as a positive as they all simply cared about me learning as much as possible by talking to as many employees as possible. I was also trusted to pick up client calls if the lines were full so the trust was there.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It has definitely allowed me to be more confident in a professional environment and allowed me to be more confident in research that I will be undergoing for my dissertation.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was first class. Allowed to have a chat, and a little bit of fun, but then when there was a serious situation in the market or with a client there was team work, and support all around. Everyone spoke to everyone and people were friendly to outsiders.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised. The HR team did a great job setting up a variety of speakers, events and tasks for us to complete in groups all external to the on the desk job. The last week will always be stressful but it was handled with care as interns found out if they were getting the grad scheme offer.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • A tremendous amount. The amount of time the employees gave me to discuss their job, the market or whatever questions I had was tremendous. It meant I came away with a great understanding of what the team as trying to achieve. We all had our own bloomberg terminal which is a great tool to have to be on the forefront of the business.
