The Role
I have now been on my placement for three months. I have had the chance to get stuck into my year-long project. So far, i have experienced what it is like to work for a large company. I have seen the many different aspects of engineering, and the different jobs that my degree can take me into.
Once i started my placement, I was treated like another colleague. This made me feel comfortable and welcome within the team I was working on. I felt comfortable to ask my team members for help, even if that was with a simple task. The team work and ethic was evident from day 1, with everyone working together and sharing ideas.
I was given the overview of my project within the first few days of my placement. I was given the freedom to make the most of this year and this project. My manager was there if I needed help, however I was left mostly on my own to complete the task in the best way I found fit.
Working in a large company has taught me not to expect things on my time scale. With the long lead times and backlog of work with others, tasks cannot be completed as soon as I'd like them too. This placement has taught me to manage my time to ensure I maximize the wait time between tasks.
Once I had been handed the project, it was seen as my responsibility to complete it. This gave me the opportunity to use what I have learnt throughout my degree and incorporate it into this job. It was my job to ensure testing was planned and completed to meet the project requirements.
This placement has taught me how to balance jobs and maximize my time. Planning is a vital aspect of a successful employee and in completing deadline tasks. I will take this skill from my placement year, and will be able to integrate this into my further studies throughout my degree and future career.
The Company
Everyone in my team was very friendly and there to help myself and the others on the team. Team bonding was emphasized throughout the company, and my team were good at ensuring we met up as a team for weekly breakfast and lunches. It was easy to contact other employees with regards to specific knowledge,
On the initial first days I was given the outline of my project. I knew my deadline and was given the chance to plan the project how I liked. Other than this, I had the freedom to complete the project how I liked. If I felt I was straying from the correct path I was able to ask my manager and colleagues for help and direction.
Schlumberger are massively invested in employee safety. Throughout the initial few weeks of my placement, we were trained in first aid, CPR and many other day to day skills to protect ourselves. The opportunity to attend training courses was common and the employees had organized many "lunch and learn" events.
Sports and Social Club
This year has provided me with the skills required to be a successful employee. This placement has given me skills I will be able to implement in the following years of my degree. Provided I am successful within my degree, I would like to see myself returning to the company having graduated.
The Culture
I was lucky enough to get in contact with other interns starting the company at the same time as myself. We were able to house share, which was beneficial as it provided us with others who were going through the same challenges as ourselves, and gave us the opportunity to form new friendships.
I, along with the other interns, lived in the center of town, which provided us with a cinema, gym, bowling and many other activities. These events were averagely priced, making it affordable for ourselves. Rent was subsidized by the company, which made the cost of living there more affordable and more comfortable.
So far I haven't had a lot of exposure to nightlife! Working long hours makes the desire to go out look less tempting! My fellow employees on occasion would organize meeting up at the weekends. This would give us a chance to bond outside of work and get to know each other better.
The employee club was an excellent benefit of working for Schlumberger. It organized events across the country and provided discounted prices for members. Additionally, with the gym being so close to our house, we were able to attend. There were many daily classes and the trainers were friendly and easy to talk to.
