The Role
I am currently undergoing my placement at Mentor Graphics. I can honestly say that I am thoroughly enjoining it, the whole working environment is fantastic and I already feel that I have learnt so many things which I can take into my final year and the rest of my career.
I personally feel that I am extremely valued at Mentor Graphics as I went into my placement thinking that some colleagues may treat me differently as I am an intern. However at Mentor Graphics I feel that my views and opinions are taken just as seriously as full time employees.
Currently I have been given ample support and guidance by my management team in order for me to get the best out of my placement year. I have had monthly reviews to establish goals and objectives so that my potential can be maximized. Also if I ever struggled with certain tasks my management has always been ready to help me, which has been great.
One of the key benefits of this placement is that you can plan your work according to time scales which suit you. So I have found that although I have been busy on a daily basis, it hasn’t been stressful as the workload is planned by me so that I can do certain tasks when I feel I have sufficient enough time to do so.
As the Marketing Intern I have already been given real responsibility, as I am in charge of all the divisions social media platforms which is a major part of the marketing department. I’ve also had the opportunity to come up with my own marketing campaigns and plan and execute them myself.
There are many things which working in marketing have already taught me which I feel are not possible to learn without doing a placement. I certainly feel that having worked with many people located around the world has benefited my communication skills, and will allow me to take these communication skills into a job once I graduate, among many other skills I have developed.
The Company
The atmosphere in my office is very lively, we have had many events such as, the Macmillan coffee morning which has been great fun. We also had a summer BBQ for the incoming placement students to be able to get to know the staff, and farewell presentations for the outgoing placement students.
The marketing placement was very well set up, in my first week I was handed over my role by the person who previously had my role. Therefore this was really good as we went through all the things which I needed to know so that, I was equipped to go at things alone once the person with my role left.
I have already been given the opportunity to do ad-hoc projects of my choice, so the company has invested not just in me but also my ideas. My manager has also provided me with access to marketing conferences for me to develop my understanding.

As there are another four interns at my office we have often gone out for lunch which has been great. But also outside of work I have also socialized with members in my team which is have been really fun.
