The Role
It was a great insight to building services as well as working for a large engineering consultancy firm which made it interesting at times therefore making it enjoyable. The placement wasn't so enjoyable when there wasnt much to do.
I believe my colleagues did value me pretty highly but having said that I wish more time was spent teaching me more so I could assist more in projects.
I had a number of different supervisors/ line managers and did always try to ensure i was up to speed with things providing guidance where needed.
It varied from day to day/project. Sometimes I had a lot to do and sometimes I had nothing to do. Overall it would of been good to have more work on a day to day basis.
On some projects I was given a fair amount of responsibility but never enough to stress about.
I developed a lot of skills whilst on placement. 95% of these skills were transferable skills such as Microsoft office, organisation, communication and project management.
The Company
The general atmosphere was friendly whilst be pretty quiet considering the size of the office.
Throughout the year I had 3 different line managers which wasn't ideal but all of them were very helpful and approachable. The application and interview process was extremely organised and very professional,
I did work on a number of major projects and was expected to assist where possible to benefit me as well as the company.
I don't believe I will work in the same department but Atkins as a whole is pretty appealing to me as they work on all kinds of projects all around the world.
The Culture
There were a number of graduate level engineers that went to lunch together but there wasn't any schemes set in place for placement students.
As I lived back at my parents house for the year I can not comment on this.
As I lived back at my parents house for the year I can not comment on this.
There was a few things that colleagues did such as play sport at lunch/after work but nothing set my the company itself.
