The Role
Had a great time and made good contacts throughout my year. At the start the office was buzzing with people but close to the end many people in IT were made redundant, It killed the office atmosphere. But got to develop lots of new skills
Worked along side a very motivated team in London, even though I was based in Newcastle. Got to fly down a couple of time to meet up. I was put in a team with other placement students and got along great
Great manager that let me walk on my own two feet but was always there if needed. If I ever wanted a day off he would never question it or say no. I was working flex so I could build up hours and take days off.
I always had work on. Most of the time work would be assigned to me but if I completed it early or fast, I would then go on to finding something to do. Either by doing some research into something new. Or finding and fixing bugs
Designed a huge dashboard from scratch and went live with 4 major projects. One was a dashboard to show the current projects going on within a team with a built in news section and much more. Others was real time analytics of ba.com and iberia.com showing how many people are on and booking flights etc.
Learnt new programming languages that i will further pursue in my final year at uni. I now have much more confidence in speaking to people that I don't know as I was forced to by working along side strangers
The Company
Hmm difficult one to answer. At times it was good because between the placement students we had good banter. But once many people left it brought a whole different atmosphere. I still had a good time with the other placement students and the team from london though.
Terrible. But not solely BA's fault. Was with a recruitment company called Hyphen and they were shockingly bad! BA were suppose to fly us down to london for our first week to give us training. But that did not happen, and they failed to tell my manager that, so I turned up on my first day and he was not expecting me
BA did not really invest any training in me. All of my training was done by myself as it was down to learning new programming languages and different technologies that nobody in the company was familiar with

I wish I could say good, but with a quarter of the IT staff being made redundant (summer 2015) it is very unlikely. They have also stopped the placements at BA and stopped the graduate scheme too. Hopefully they might bring it back
The Culture
Very much so. My course mate happen to get into BA with me and was put in the same team as me and another placement student from the same university. We divided the tasks between us and worked efficiently between the three of us.
I go to Northumbria Uni and the placement was in Newcastle so I already knew the area and what was cheep or not. I pay £80 a week for my room but that is with all bills included. Lunchs or dinners our typically cost between £10 and £20. Plus drink is cheep up north!
Ha. Newcastle is the party city of the UK. Many people come up here for hen and stag dos. Plenty of students around with cheep entry and cheeper drinks most nights. Saturday nights could get a bit pricy as the locals tend to come out then
Nope. Nothing was ever going on outside of work for people to join in. It felt like once people go home they don't tend to see anyone else until the next day, But that can be expected if you are working with someone all day. You have to have a life
