The Role
Working at Mentor Graphics has been an enriching and fulfilling experience for me. Working in a relaxed and open environment, you are immediately integrated into the team of talented software engineers and QA engineers. What i enjoy most about the placement is the relaxed atmosphere with welcoming colleagues.
From day one into my placement I was given real responsibilities, being assigned into projects. Although this was a huge step as an intern, it was easy to ask for help anytime and the colleagues friendly approach made it even more easier.
The previous interns of the company were assigned to teach me the day to day work and responsibilities as a new intern in the company which was very helpful.
In Mentor Graphics you are given responsibility for completing set tasks within each month, where you work with talented engineers/programmers to analyse problems on a daily basis with the software you are working (FloTherm XT).
I was treated not as a student in the company, but as a professional engineer. The company does give you the opportunity to gain real engineer experience treated you as one of their professional engineering employee.
When I first started learning CFD in my first year of university, I found it very intriguing and since then I have had interest in CFD. If you are into CFD, specifically thermal analysis including computer components and circuit boards, then this job is perfect for learning more about CFD. This placement offers a great opportunity to gain knowledge into CFD programmes, and gain insights that can be used as part of a final year at university.
The Company
The work atmosphere is very relaxing is full of experience for me. Working in a relaxed and open environment, you are immediately integrated into the team of talented software engineers.
The company employs a lot of student interns each year and they are well experienced with students. The company is very organised, on your first day anything that is needed as an employee is set up for you to come and get started straight away.
Everything I have learnt will be useful in my future studies especially regarding CFD and ThermoFluids. The company provided everything that is needed as a student become all rounded mature engineer by the end of the placement.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
There were couple of employees that I worked with who had completed a year placement with the company and then were taken back upon finishing their studies.
The Culture
There were movie evenings and sometimes going out for meals.
The living cost is generally good and taking into consideration that I worked in Hampton Court branch which is based in London and the rent is high compare to other cities across the UK.
Hampton Court is very close to Kingston Upon Thames and there is everything regarding nightlife.
Yeah London is a huge city so you could get involved in anything that is of interest to you.
