    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have found my internship to be very enjoyable. Even though I have decided that this might not be the industry I want to spend the rest of my working life in, I don't regret coming here and I have learned loads.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • You are in no way treated like 'just an intern' here, you become a vital part of the team with real responsibilities. The majority of people I've met here are more than happy to help you out with anything, even your silly questions. They have been very patient with me and understanding that I am still learning and won't get everything right first time. Plenty of staff get-togethers, more like friends than colleagues.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Again, depends who you get as your manager. I was very lucky and had a manager who cared about my advancement and development just as much as I did. A lot of the guidance was given through observation but I also had daily and weekly catch-up sessions where I could talk about any concerns I might have been having or just a general 'how are you getting on' talk. I also had monthly performance reviews which were very helpful for improvement. If I had a problem, my manager was brilliant at helping me solve them without the spoon-feeding

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Depends what role you're in, in Finance / Risk / Vendor Implementation for example, you are likely to be busy all the time. I, on the other hand, had quite a bit of free time here and there; which was nice really because it gave me the chance to talk to more people and I was more likely to hit deadlines.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was allocated project manager of a massive game changer, bringing a new product to market, working alongside the CEO and MD's. It was a lot of responsibility because the senior leadership team were so keen to get this project completed. It was a bit scary but I had a lot of support. There were no tea and coffee responsibilities or likewise here!

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Definitely time management, you have really strict deadlines and you are in charge of your own calendar and getting things done. I gained so much confidence because I was doing presentations in front of senior management so often, that I was no longer nervous.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone is very knowledgeable, professional and wants to get the job done, but there is a more casual atmosphere here compared to what I've witnessed in other offices. You are allowed to talk as much as you want, wear what you like on Fridays and there are definitely jokes flying around here there and everywhere. It's generally a really happy place to be.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I was given a thorough induction plan before I started giving me details in what I would be up to in my first two weeks. On boarding for me was easy and I had no problems apart from IT issues but nothing could be done about that. Intern events throughout the year are planned well in advance.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Lots of reviews and catch-ups. Skills workshops always available either in your office or in another and managers usually happy to accommodate for that. Loads of free online training you can sign up to.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

    Healthcare/Dental

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • As I said, this probably isn't the industry I have in mind for myself now, but I would work for GE again happily.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • All the interns in the office do get together outside of work a bit, we met up with the interns from the other offices around the UK too and went out with them. We all knew each other and met up at lunchtimes, talked on emails during the day (about work obviously!).

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Bristol...it's more expensive than some other areas I guess but nothing quite like London.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I worked in Bristol so fairly busy, good transport links to the city centre. Not really my thing so can't comment more than that.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were quite a few days out advertised around the office, I chose not to get involved with many of them because of my other responsibilities. I heard of people going on assault courses and family fun days etc. on weekends. We also had Christmas do's for the whole business, volunteering days followed by a night out.
