The Role
It was never too overwhelming and there were frequent events that I could take up to break the monotony of regular work.
My team members, especially my manager, were always available to answer any questions that I had or to help me with work. My comments were also taken seriously and I was treated as a regular member of the team despite the difference in experience.
My manager and senior members of the team were very helpful and readily answered any questions I had.
There was always work to be done and deadlines to meet. I worked an average of 8 hours a day but there wasn't much time for breaks.
I was given a lot of responsibility to overlook some very critical systems and often had to work on the production environment so I had to be very careful. However, I was never given complete responsibility for deadlines of the projects I was working so the people I was working with were more worried about it than I was.
Learning test-driven development and best coding practices has allowed me to write more efficient and clean code. I also had to use many external libraries and work with other people so I can now understand someone else's work much faster if i need to work on it.
The Company
It is an investment bank so the general atmosphere is that everyone is working. On the cafeteria floor, however, there are two tennis tables and the atmosphere is much more relaxed.
There was a proper training program set up for placement and summer interns that ran for 10 weeks.
I had regular occasional review meetings with my manager and he pointed out which personal aspects I should work on. There were some formal company reviews for this as well.

The Culture
Social scene was somewhat lacking in my team but from what I could see it really depends on which team you are put in.
It is London and the Goldman Sachs offices are near St. Pauls. Cost of living socialising is very high.
Night-life near the offices was not very good but there are other places in central London that have a very good night-life although they can be quite expensive.
There were regular training sessions, sports events and even some parties that I attended during my placement.
