The Role
I enjoyed the feeling of doing something new, and learning all about a system I had never encountered before. However, the work itself was at times rather tedious, but that is due to me not being qualified enough to take on more work.
Realistically, I was of little direct value to other members of staff, and while my project may aid engineers in the future, I had not the skills to help out any of the professionals.
My line manager was fantastic; the busiest man in the department, but always had time to help us out and explain any detail we were unsure of. He did not always look over my shoulder, but rather left me to my own devices, but if I went to him for help, he never let me down.
It fluctuated; when we had all our data and were free to get working, we would work the day away, whereas on other days we just had to pass the time while we waited for things to come together.
We were responsible for getting our project done, but nobody else was depending on us.
Working in a professional environment will be of great use, since I have become accustomed to meeting and talking to people of authority, and those I didn't know: always intimidating! Technical wise, if I continue to work for this company, my general knowledge of how the grid operates will come in useful.
The Company
We had good fun, but when everyone had work to do, we got it done.
I had two projects, one of which was fairly clear cut but gave me some leeway with how to approach it. The second had no clear objective, and seemed to be a rather hasty addition, which was disappointing.
I have matured somewhat personally, but I do not think I have garnered any great technical skills over the placement.
Subsidised/Company Gym
There is potential.
The Culture
We had a ball as a group, really helped make the placement very enjoyable.
We lucked out - rent was very cheap. Elsewise, it was not particularly expensive anywhere: pretty good!
Not a horrendous amount to do, but we made the most of it ourselves!
We made our own, travelling to other places and making the most of our time off/weekends.
