The Role
I heavily enjoyed the project, the experience and the opportunity that National Grid provided me with. To have had 7 site visits in 2 months and the responsibility for a real issue within the company was fantastic. The project was challenging and had real depth to it. Furthermore many of the internship projects involved having to talk to specialists and experts to solve the issue rather than going through data everyday. It really allowed you to get a good grasp of the industry and the company.
Everyone was happy to give up their time to help me and my partner on our project or just to have a chat about what they do. They were all enthusiastic, friendly and acknowledged us which is more than I can say for a lot of other companies I've interned for.
Supervisor was great. Despite being a bit quiet his support was amazing. He made sure we got the full value off our placement and joined in with us on after work fun.
As long as you did a reasonable amount of work everyday and plan your days ahead, you'll have a few hours free time to explore anything you're interested in.
While the issue existed in the company, we were among the first to produce a document with suggested changes. We were given the freedom to investigate in as much depth as we wanted and it definitely felt like a great responsibility was on us to fix the issue for them. It was a good experience.
7 Site visits, 7 asset technology presentations by specialist engineers and plenty of meetings with employees from across the departments made the internship rich and educational. I definitely improved my communication and networking skills as well as gaining a wealth of knowledge on the industry, the company and the assets.
The Company
Very fun environment. A variety of personalities and culture. Never too serious but work gets done!
Very organised. We were looked after very well and I can only imagine the amount of planning that must have gone in for us scholars.
With all the contribution from the company and its employees, I would say they invested a lot in us.
Company Car
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
It's a good time to join the company with all the large projects going on and as a scholar there is much incentive for us to continue.
The Culture
Events ranged from curry nights, movies, paint balling, karting, trips to theme parks. Was definitely a fun yet productive holiday.
£90 a week but the location was flawless. I was near a park, lake, bank, tesco, station, cinema and everything else you can think of.
Night life was present but wouldn't say it was great.
A few football and volunteering opportunities
