    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My internship was, overall, very enjoyable, but some of the work was not as exciting as expected.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone at KPMG was very friendly, welcoming and always willing to help. This made you feel like a very valuable member of the team.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager and colleagues I worked with were very supportive and my performance manager gave me very good feedback and advice throughout my placement; this was one of the highlights of the internship as it helped indicate areas I could improve.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This varied; some days were busy, whilst other days could be quite slow in terms of work. This does however allow you to talk and meet with other colleagues and understand more about their work. However, you need to be very proactive to get most of your work and this is my advice to any others who get onto the KPMG internship; 4 weeks goes extremely fast and to make the most of it you must start asking for work as soon as you start.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • My responsibility varied, but most of the work I was given was useful to most projects I worked on. However, you have to be willing to work on less exciting tasks before you will be given more important work by senior colleagues. This again depends on how proactive you are and how much passion you show in terms of wanting to do work for more senior members of the firm.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed many skills during my placement, but one of the most exciting was gaining an insight into financial models and how to use them. This should help me going forward. My soft skills were also developed and this should stand me in good stead going into my future career.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was very relaxed, but everyone was working very hard throughout the days. You can approach almost anyone and they will be willing to have a chat.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was well organised. However, it could improve by providing more social events to get interns from other departments talking with one another.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The training programs provided during the internship were limited, but very useful. The limitation again is to be expected given it is only 4 weeks long. However, more could be done in terms of allowing all interns to attend; because if you are busy during the time the event will run, you will probably not be able to attend.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • If you can establish yourself and produce good work, you can go very far within this organisation.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • This was entirely dependent on how well you can manage to coordinate with other interns outside your working hours.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I live in London so cost of living was low for me. However, cost of living in London is high so that is not that great. Social events for interns were limited.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • London nightlife is brilliant; so many things to do.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I believe that you could join sports clubs and this allowed you to socialise with other colleagues and interns. In addition, there were volunteering opportunities you could sign up for. However, due to the short nature of the internship this was not really that applicable.
