The Role
I learnt a lot about the company and industry. I was given meaningful work and great mentorship. The people I worked with were friendly and supportive, always willing to offer advice and answer any questions I had, whether or not they were big or small. The feedback I received was also useful for my professional development.
I was entrusted with proper work which allowed me to contribute to the audit processes my colleagues were doing. I think this goes to show the trust they placed in me. I was also given client-facing work opportunities. This I feel showed that they trusted me to engage with KPMG's clients in a professional manner. I was made to feel like a real part of the teams I worked in.
My supervisors always emphasised that I should always ask questions whenever in doubt. They ensured that I was never left with any doubts about my work. During the first week of my internship, I also received extensive guidance and mentoring. This was important as audit was something new to me. The mentoring I received really helped me to get on with the work given to me.
I was always kept occupied with meaningful work throughout the day. Whenever, I was done with the assignments given to me, I would be promptly given more work to do and I really appreciated that. The internship was a very meaningful and educational period for me. I never felt that any of my time was being wasted.
I was given work which had a direct bearing on the collective work done by my team. I was also frequently tasked to directly obtain data and clarification from clients. All my work was significant and I was allowed to tackle my assignments with a lot of autonomy. Whenever I spotted discrepancies in client data, I was tasked with resolving or finding explanations for these discrepancies.
I picked up many new skills and developed existing ones during this internship. For instance, my client engagement skills were definitely honed as I had numerous opportunities to engage with clients and I am sure my experiences will prove invaluable when I enter the workforce after I graduate. While my internship was only for a month, I am sure that my experiences will help smoothen my entry into the audit profession in the future.
The Company
There was a great sense of camaraderie in the office. Everyone enjoyed working with each other and were good friends even outside work. People were happy to talk to each other about their work and other affairs. There was a lot of positivity in the office and this made work very enjoyable.
Everything was very well organised. The first few days involved a variety of induction programmes and briefings which I found useful. I was then assigned to a great variety of jobs for the remainder of my internship, with my final 2 days being spent in the office. My internship even had a social I could attend so this internship was definitely very well-rounded.
The company did the most it could to invest in me during my short one month stint. Everyone was forthcoming with offers of help and willing to answer my questions. Listening to stories from my colleagues, I was also convinced that KPMG provides great support for those studying for their professional qualifications.
I am convinced that a career with KPMG is a great one to have. The company is doing well and winning tenders. Its approach to growth is sound and effective as well. It is looking to expand some of its offices and this means that there are many opportunities for new joiners to prove their worth and earn promotions.
The Culture
The office regularly organises socials. I managed to attend one of these socials during my internship. It was great fun getting to know my colleagues, the managers and the partners. The summer barbeque that the social committee organised was well run and well organised, with the great food being a highlight.
Accommodation in Cardiff does not cost much compared to most places. I have friends in Cardiff as well so this helped make my internship a happy one.
There is a lot to do after work. The office frequently organises socials as well.
I know the company is very supportive of its employees undertaking voluntary and charitable commitments outside of work.
