The Role
I really enjoyed my placement as it provided me with valuable information on this industries requirements and how it works. I got to talk and have Q & A sessions with leadeing experts in the electricity transmission area. They tried to provide us with as much information as possible that not only related to our immediate job but will also prove helpfull in future palcements and university. One of the best parts of the placement were the site visits because we got to see how the actual physical part of the business works. We got to link the things that we read and learned about with images. This gave us a better understanding on our actual job.
I was part of a team of four members. I didn't know them before but we bonded very quickly. Trust was an important part of our group as we trusted the informations provided by the other members, thus improving our work efficiency. Each one's work was valued as it represented a part of the project. We had meetings and every opinion was taken into consideration and discussed.
Our manager provided us with his full support and guidance straight from day one. Whenever we had a question about anything he would stop what he was doing and tried to help us. He also tried to help us get a better idea of our job by setting up meetings with different people that provided helpfull information. He would check on us everyday and tried to make our placement as enjoyable as possible. He also joined us in activities outside the work space so our relationship was very good.
The amount of actual work we had to do was ballanced perfectly with talk sessions with different persons. The actual work didn't take very much time but the learing part occupied the rest of my day.
Because I was on my first placement and my knowledge is limited in this particular area I wasn't given very much responsability. My responsability was to try to do my job as good as possible and get the project done. In the process of elaborating the policy I had to make some imporatnt upodates to the databases that will be helpfull to National Grid!
The skills that I acquired during the internship will prove valuable in my university studies as I now have a good understanding of both the technical aspect of the bussines and the management aspect. When we will study transformers, boosters, etc in latter years I will have a head start over the others.
The Company
Being in a formal working environment, the atmosphere was quite good due to the fact that we worked closely together. Also the other persons working around us were very friendly to us and this cheered the atmosphere.
The placement was quite well organised but more considerantion has to be given to the needs of a student to develop a particular project( software needs, information, etc ) and also the actual feasibility of the project has to be carrefully considered.
National Grid provided us with basically a large bank of information. Everyday was a school day as we permanently learned new things.

I enjoyed my placement and also I liked how the company is organised. I have studied future opportunities within the company and the prospects looks very promising
The Culture
We all had great fun! We were quite tight mainly because we were 9 peoaple that lived together. We organised a lot of activities and visits in the surroundings.
The living cost was very cheap mainly because we got a very good accomodation deal. The socialising costs were average.
We went to a few pubs and clubs and they were quite good but the diversity wasn't that big.
I organised a few activities, visits and trips so we had our weekends quite full.
