    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • During my placement I took part in a wide range of work. I got a lot of client exposure, sitting in client meetings, taking notes on client calls and also working on site assisting with the Tax Audit. My day to day work involved filling tax returns aswell as doing some basic computations and researching potential clients. I really enjoyed my time at KPMG and it gave me a brilliant insight into what a future career would be like at kpmg aswell as giving valuable experience which would be applicable at any professional services firm.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • While I was at KPMG I was able to fully immerse myself into the team at the Milton Keynes office. While I was there I went out for lunch with the team for birthdays and celebrations. The team was fun and it was a pleasure to be a part of.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • For all of the work I completed I was given clear instructions where I was encouraged to ask any questions that I had. Initially I had lots of questions and everyone was happy to answer. During my placement some of my work fed through to my furture interviewer (final) and I was able to present my work to him.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Through the process someone was dedicated to my personal development to make sure that I was getting the most out of my experience. This meant that I was never in a position of having too much to do and was able to focus on learning as much as I could throughout the process.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Seeing accountancy and tax principles applied was massively helpful for future study in this area at university so that you can understand how its application in practice. Furthermore the knowledge will help once a graduate position is secured. Getting used to using the software employed by companies like KPMG was also useful for the future.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was extremely fun and there was a lot more banter than I anticipated. The working environment was ideal. When people had birthdays we would go out for lunch and have birthday cake in the office. The partner in charge also treated the team to a meal while I was there as they had met certain targets. Overall it was a fantastic place to work! Most people went home at 3 on fridays as part of the jumpstart friday scheme which was really good.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • After the first day I knew exactly what was in store for me for the next four weeks so from an organisational perspective it was very good. Having 3 days of tax training before going into the office was also ideal as it meant that I was actually able to help and made the initial teething problems of working in a new office a lot easier.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As mentioned previously, the firm invested heavily in my. For my first 3 days I went to KPMG's tax business school which is located in canary wharf. We were provided with accomodation for these 3 days very close to canary wharf which was a really good experience. Throughout the process I acquired skills on the relevant software which will be helpful when joining any professional service firm in the future.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • After 3 years at the firm you will be a fully qualified accountant and a tax advisor, one of the best post graduation training schemes that you can do. From there the world is your oyster, whether at KPMG or elsewhere. KPMG consistently ranks among the top 4 graduate recruiters emphasising this fact, there is no where better to start your career.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Unfortunatly I was the only intern in my office but from speaking to the team there is lots of socials amongst their "year group" as you spend 9 months together in london before going back to the regional offices. The social scene is likely to be as good as any other firm. During my time there, there was trips to the ashes and to the formula one on a company wide basis, and that was just in 4 weeks!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Well within budget and shouldn't be a factor that needs considering. I personally commuted from coventry to milton keynes and this was less than ten pounds a day by train. If you had needed to, your wages would have been able to pay for accomodation in the area. Wouldn;t worry at all.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Good, there was lots of nights out and oppurtunity for networking. There was lots of joint events with the Watford office and the accountancy teams as well as wider London region functions. The nightlife in milton keynes is what you would expect, lots of bars and restaurants and a really nice place to spend an evening.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Other than the social events mentioned before, not massively. However I'm sure there would be oppurtunities if you were keen to set up societies or groups to partake in an activity of your choice and i was told at much when I mentioned the hobbies I would be interested in doing.
