The Role
The work was demanding and required me to think differently than I normally do when taking my degree (Geography). As a result, it was hugely rewarding and enjoyable to know that even as an intern that I could help with client projects and make a difference, even if it was a small one. The feeling of being valued and worthwhile in such an enormous organisation was a special one, and one that made this internship hugely enjoyable.
I felt very valued by my team. Because the internship takes place over the summer months, you often find that lots of employees are taking holiday, or graduates are off at Accountancy College. Accordingly, you can find yourself in a position of responsibility that you might consider above you. If you can show yourself to be capable you will be quickly trusted and assigned more work.
I had a buddy whilst on the programme and he was often my first point of contact when at a loose end. This said, I was surrounded by first and second year graduates who had all been in my position before. They acted as a great line of support and were always around to answer questions when I needed some answers.
I worked from 8:30am to roughly 5:00pm every day, with a healthy lunch break. Undoubtedly there were days where the work was more hectic than others, and there were days where the work didn't flow through to me as frequently. This said, I was always relatively busy. Indeed, if I found myself sitting with nothing to do, I went to look for work as opposed to waiting for it to come to me.
Given the technical nature of tax structuring it was often difficult for my team to give me more complex work - I simply didn't have the technical knowledge to help out in this area. However, I was always included in some capacity and made to feel like I was adding to projects and helping drive them forward.
I believe the skills of teamwork, communication and attention to detail will be hugely advantageous in my future studies, and life more generally. I left the internship with a better set of interpersonal skills and my ability to scan documents, pick out the useful information and digest it also improved tremendously.
The Company
Very relaxed - everyone had work to do and they knew they had to do it. Nevertheless, there was not a cut throat culture and deadlines were very chilled.
EY struck a great balance between spoon feeding the interns and making them find their own feet. We were helped out by buddies and counsellors however we were also encouraged to go out and discover the firm ourself and build our own personal networks. This freedom was fantastic as it allowed me to try out opportunities in other areas of the firm.
We were given online training in our service line and a three day induction.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing - they offer a lot of their interns full-time graduate employment.
The Culture
Yes. We were given a series of events at the beginning of the placement and then a big leaving party. In addition to this I socialised with my team throughout the 6 weeks.
I commuted from my home so I only had to pay for trains in the morning and evening. This said, living in central London is never cheap.
Central London - always places to go to and things to see.
Yes, the firm encouraged their interns to join company sports clubs and other societies. I joined the Rugby Club and played a bit of sevens during my time.
