The Role
I really enjoyed my 4 week internship with KPMG. Each week I visited a different client and was exposed to lots of different businesses, I learnt about completing an audit and the different processes and tasks involved. In my last week I shadowed a director for the day, this was invaluable experience. I attended internal and external audit meetings, it was really interesting and I learnt about KPMG and the director's career path.
The colleagues I worked with were all really supportive and helpful. Each week I was given different tasks to complete and if I finished these early I was given other things to do. I was responsible for completing some of the audit files and I was also given client facing tasks. I had to request different information from the clients and ask for an explanation if needed. My confidence improved over the weeks, and I felt like my work contributed.
The support from KPMG was excellent. I was assigned a buddy on my first day who was really friendly and supportive, she introduced me to the people that I would be working with over the next month and also answered any questions I had over the month. There was also a manager who was responsible for the interns, who I had meetings with to discuss feedback. All the managers that I worked with on the audits also gave me feedback at the end of the week, this was really good.
Every day I was assigned different tasks to complete and if I finished these early I would ask for something else to do. There was never a moment where I did not have anything to do. This was good as I felt my time was valued. I was also exposed to lots of different areas of work.
During the placement I was given a significant amount of responsibility as an intern. I was producing files for the audit and had client facing tasks. I spoke to clients to request for different files and go back if I needed an explanation. Everyone was willing to help and answer any questions to help me complete the work.
I learnt so much about audit, KPMG and how different businesses work. In addition I developed lots of different skills such as communication and teamwork. I worked with a different team each week. Skills such as time management will help me during my final year at university. All the skills I developed will be invaluable for a graduate job.
The Company
For most of the time I was out of the office and working on client sites. The atmosphere at client site was good and we would go for lunch together, and on Friday's we would have breakfast too. During the internship we were invited to different socials, including a trip to York races. This was really fun and everyone made us feel included and welcome.
The internship was organised very well. Every week I went to a different client site and for some of the days I was in the office and also shadowed a partner for a day. I had a buddy and performance manager. The audit manager would email in advance of the week that I was with them to tell me where the company was based and to introduce themselves. Overall, the organisation was excellent.
My first day was a training day in Manchester, we were told about KPMG as a company and its values and a brief introduction to audit from an audit manager. We had the opportunity to ask questions. Then on my first day in the office, I was given an introduction to the audit programme and some information about what to expect. Each week different colleagues would give me an overview of the company and the work that I was doing.

In the last week of the internship I had a graduate interview. I passed the interview and have received a graduate offer. I look forward to returning to KPMG when I have finished university. It has reduced some of the pressure of final year knowing that I have a job when I finish. The skills that I have learnt will also help towards final year and when I start the graduate job.
The Culture
There were three other interns during the month I was there. We had the opportunity to go for lunch together when we were in the office and on the first day in the office we all went out for lunch with our buddies. In the first week we were invited to a BBQ on Friday evening which was nice to meet people outside of the work environment, we spoke to lots of the graduates and other employees. On our last Friday we went to York races with everyone on a coach from the office, this was really fun and made us feel very welcomed.
The cost of living was reasonable and I was living in my student house for university. I lived in the student area so that was always a lot of students around. Some of the other interns rented a room in student halls for the month, which was reasonably priced and very close to the office.
The night life area in the area I worked was good. There is a number of clubs and bars that are very busy on the weekends. There are also lots of different restaurants and shops. There were opportunities to get involved in different activities such as different sports, like football. I think as a full time employee there are various projects to get involved in. Each employee is entitled to a certain number of hours to use for charity work, part of the corporate responsibility projects.
