The Role
The work is very interesting, as is uptodate work that is required to be done. If i didnt complete it, another employee would have to.
I felt very valued because everyone wants the work that I'm doing to be completed. This is because it will add a huge benifit to the control room staff.
Because I sit opposite my manager, it is very easy to ask him any questions or queries. There was quite a bit of guidance given at the start of the project too.
On some days there was lots of work to do, but others there wasn't much. This was good though as it gave me the opportunity to go on a couple of site visits, and look at other projects that were being worked on in the department.
I was responsible for my own section of the project, but that was it.
The power engineering knowledge that I have gained from my placement will be vital in both my degree studies and my future career.
The Company
General atmosphere in the office was very positive. Because the majority of the floor plate was used for hot desking by the control room staff, we got to meet quite a few new people.
Placement was very well set up, with desk space and access to a computer given to us promptly
If there were any training presentations that were held in the office, and if we were interested in them, our manager allowed us to go to them, which was very useful. We got to learn about other aspects of the company which wasn't related to our placement, such as Energy Trading.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
The future employment prospects within the organisation are high because they are always looking for new engineers, and have a very good graduate scheme.
The Culture
Amongst the other placement students/colleagues, we did socialise during lunch, but because we all lived in different areas around Wokingham, not much socialising outside of work hours was done.
Cost of living was very reasonable as I had relatives in the area, but socialising was good as there were plenty of areas to eat etc. It was also only a short train ride to surrounding towns and cities.
Reading was better for night life, but there were a few places in and around Wokingham to go at night.
Because of the proximitiy with other towns and cities, it was very easy to get involved with other activities.
