The Role
I enjoyed the placement a fair amount. The atmosphere in the office was great and the working hours were normally about 9-5.
They made me feel valued. They nearly always took the time to explain to me why they wanted me to do what they did and always said thank you after I did anything.
I had a buddy who was a constant source of great support and also a more senior counsellor whom I had fortnightly meetings with.
This varied. Summer is off-season in the tax world so I occasionally had spells of 3-4 days of being very busy but also occasionally had days where I had scarcely anything to do, especially towards the end of the program.
I was given a similar amount of responsibility to someone with a graduate job, so that was great.
For my degree studies, I learn very little. However, the internship really boosted my commercial awareness, gave me great insight into how an office environment differs to university and also improved my maths and IT skills. It also gave me much better experience of interacting with senior professionals.
The Company
Really positive. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. I never heard of anyone losing their temper and people didn't seem stressed about the work they were doing.
I thought it was fairly well organised but I got the impression the HR people hadn't sought out work for us in advance. They seemed to just assume we would muck in which was fine but often meant that, because it was low season, I had little to do.
There was a good variety of feedback, which was helpful, but very little training. The induction days at the start of the programme were sadly rather useless.
Very. I would be happy to work for EY in the future.The firm seemed to provide all its employees with good careers prospects.
The Culture
The other interns in my service line were very nice but we didn't do much out of hours socialising. I made a few friends in other service lines though.
It was ok. Travelling by tube is obviously expensive, and London is an expensive city. I was fortunate to stay with family so the accommodation element to this question isn't really applicable.
I didn't really go out in the area. I would imagine it was fairly minimal.
