The Role
I felt the placement gave me a well-rounded perspective of community pharmacy, which is just what I was hoping to gain. The variety of tasks I was given kept me stimulated and challenged throughout.
All members of staff were completely supportive and I felt everyone had time for me and there were plenty of people I could ask for help if I needed to. I was praised often, and given responsibilities which suggests I was a valued member of the team.
My supervisor was outstanding. I was immediately put at ease and felt I could ask questions which she would make time to answer. I was allowed to make the most of regular study time which helped supplement the hands-on learning I carried out on a daily basis. My knowledge was tested, but in a supportive manner.
Generally the workpace was just right, although there were the odd few hours on a few quiet days when the pharmacy wasn't busy.
I was given as much responsibility as I think I could have been at this point in my studies. The main point of responsibility was conducting diabetes tests, however all of the tasks I carried out on a daily basis carried a level of responsibilty that goes hand in hand with providing a service to the public.
The training I carried out regarding the sale of over the counter medication was fantastic as this is something that will be of enormous use in my future career and is best learnt through scenario based learning which I got plenty of.
The Company
All staff were always friendly and didn't mind having a laugh when appropriate. A relaxed environment.
Very well organised. In the first week my tutor and I constructed a timetable to outline the tasks I would carry out each week to ensure I gained experience of a range of aspects.
I felt the company really saw my time at the branch as a means of developing a member of staff in preparation for a career with them in the future. I felt they wanted me to achieve the best for myself in terms of training and development.
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
I have been offered a job with the company which is highly appealing as I feel the company will bring out the best of my abilities and there is a great scope for progression within the company.
The Culture
I was only at the branch for a short time (six weeks), but a leaving meal was arranged for me which all members of staff attended which was really nice.
I lived at home with my parents so that was cheap and socialising in Newport/Cardiff is also reasonable.
Cardiff offers a fantastic night out with something for everyone. I wouldn't bother going out in Newport though.
None relating to work itself and not many out of that.
